The
Experience

There’s a chance you won’t leave this snug home with its views over woods to distant Panicale. A former woodcutter’s cottage, it’s been Hilary’s bolthole for years, filled with objects from her much-travelled past as an ambassador’s wife. Downstairs there’s a homely sitting room with fireplace, antiques and comfy chairs; next-door, a tiny country kitchen with polished dining table. Upstairs to two cosy bedrooms with embroidered bed covers, rugs on terracotta tiles and curious mementoes, perhaps original artwork or a bird collection on an antique wardrobe. One room has wood-turned twin beds; the other a fairytale four-poster single bed. They share a simple old-fashioned bathroom. Sit on the shaded terrace with its flower-pots, stone dining table, cushion-covered bench and wrought-iron candle sconces for romantic evenings. Hilary – bright and charming – or her courteous Sri Lankan assistant, Lal, will welcome, then leave you alone. Explore Perugia, Lake Trasimeno or Cortona; wander the gardens and olive groves; discover the secret, book-lined cabin. Curl up on its sofa and gaze at dreamy views.

Reviews

I shall never forget arriving at this utterly enchanting cottage in the Umbrian oak forest. Breathtaking views, enchanting garden and peaceful walks galore. Hilary's diplomatic life a large part of which was spent in Sri Lanka where she met and employed Lal who now lives in a small cottage on the premises and is acting Guardian. He helps in innumerable ways and will cook meals by appointment. the charms of this tiny cottage are endless, furnished with love and affection and filled with Hilary's internationally eclectic collection.

Kirstie, None

a magical and relaxing place, away from the turmoil of the real world.Lovely local food and wine available locally. No need to visit a health farm to recharge batteries. Lal is a professional and inventive cook,so delicious meals are readily available. I would look forward to coming again. The house is a delight to stay in and the surroundings tranquil and pastoral.

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Hilary Costa Sanseverino

  • Most weekends during the summer, each little hilltop village stages musical evenings, operas or concerts. Preggio's opera season is famous.
  • During the summer there are many markets, the most famous of which is on the first Sunday and preceding Saturday of each month at Arezzo, and each little town and village has a weekly market selling local produce and great value clothes.
  • 15 minutes from the house, in the small town of Tavernelle, there is a water park with 3 swimming pools, games and a bar service under umbrellas with deckchairs.
  • Lake Trasimeno (25 mins away) offers a wide range of activities. Take a ferry to the Lake's islands; visit the nature reserve of Isola Polvese; hire a boat for the day, explore the Lake and try your hand at fishing.
  • Less than an hour away, is the beautiful town of Assisi with the Church of St Francis. There are several interesting Etruscan museums and tombs in Chuisi and in Perugia; the gallery of Umbrian art in Perugia includes works by Fra Angelico and Perugino.
  • Locally there are interesting museums: the glass museum in Piegaro and the paleontological museum in Pietrafitta. There are also charming towns, eg Citta della Pieve, birth place of Perugino and Panicale with its popular opera house.
