The Experience

This will suit unfussy souls who adore being immersed in nature. You’re miles from any town in the hills of Umbria where country roads wind through agricultural land and dense woods then a bumpy strada bianca takes you down to Alan and Lucia’s remote ivy and wisteria-covered home, one end of which has been converted, very simply. You walk straight in to the compact living room with its pale stone walls, old leather sofa and wood-burner for chilly evenings (there’s a sofa bed for extra people too); a bright country kitchen is at the far end with a wide sink at the window and curtained cupboards underneath. There’s a small bathroom down here too with a large walk-in shower. Up untreated, rustic wooden stairs to two double bedrooms – one en suite, both with a nice outlook.  It’s utterly unpretentious and with no frills, so won’t suit style seekers, but this is paradise for serious mountain walkers, birdwatchers and peace-seekers. You’ll find a bottle of wine, veg from the garden and a loaf of homemade bread waiting for you and your own lovely pool with views to cool off in. Alastair would love it here.

Such a relaxing stay in an idyllic location; we spent many more days enjoying the pool and the views than we anticipated! The apartment is beautiful, kitchen very well equipped, and Alan and Lucia were fantastic and welcoming hosts. Would highly recommend!

Beautiful hand crafted house in a tranquil and natural setting. We idled away our days, in total seclusion at the private pool and dined al fresco on the lovely shaded terrace filled with rambling roses and tumbling geraniums. We received a very warm welcome from Alan and Lucia who were the perfect hosts and neighbours! The house is well located for visiting Gubbio, Spoleto, Assisi and more. Wild Umbria is the perfect choice for those who love wilderness, nature, relaxation and solitude. Our only complaint was that we had to leave! We take heart in knowing that we shall return again soon.

We were bowled over by the uniqueness and beauty of this special house. My husband and I spent 6 days at Wild Umbria enjoying the beauty of the scenery and the hospitality of Alan and Lucia. The house is handcrafted, the garden full of wild flowers and butterflies, the pool completely secluded as you walk about a minute through the wood to the top of the hill. We were greeted with a gift box of homegrown/made produce and the food we'd need to make our evening meal. We've promised to come back again when it's truffle season so we can watch Tess the dog sniff them out!

We stayed at Wild Umbria for a few days in 2018 and have just re-booked for a week in 2019. A perfect place to unwind and recharge the batteries. Off the beaten track and beautifully rustic, but with everything you need for a self-contained relaxing stay (including good wi-fi if you insist on staying in touch with the outside world). Love this place and its welcoming hosts. If you need a respite from the normal world, this is a great place to go.

Alan and Lucia have created a beautiful house which is spacious, well-equipped and very comfortable . The pool is a real added bonus and the views are spectacular. With a plentiful supply of home grown fruit and veg from Alan's garden this is rural life at its best. It is also perfectly located to explore the wonderful hill-top towns of Gubbio, Perugia and Assisi, amongst others.

We had a very nice time in wild umbria. Being lost in the nature in such a cosy house gave us a fantastic feeling. We appreciated very much the region and were charmed by our guests. Getting fresh vegetables from the garden was just wonderful. We have already recommended the house to our friends.

Xavier, Fribourg

Another lovely stay at this beautiful and secluded place. We love the pool with its amazing views, and this year we also saw so many lovely butterflies. Alan and Lucia as ever went the extra mile to make us feel at home and look after us. We enjoyed day trips to Assisi and Gubbio, and had a very good meal at il Cocco de Mamma, just down the hill. We will be back ...

Tim, Great Dunmow

We had the most relaxing time here! The apartment is really spacious and has plenty of sleeping and living space for 4 or more. We will definitely be coming with friends next year. The kitchen is really well equipped and of course, we loved the luxurious private pool with stunning views! Although the locality is 'wild', it is only a short drive to restaurants and towns, with plenty of things to do nearby. Alan and Lucia wonderful hosts.

The dream of a remote holiday away from the bustle of life was fulfilled. Wild Umbria is surrounded by quiet and darkness at night (nightjars and fireflies excepted!). Butterflies and birds were in abundance during our stay. We tore ourselves away to spend a day in beautiful Gubbio but returned for walks and relaxation. As wild as we hoped it would be.

Christopher and Diana, Sussex, England

We had a fabulous time at Wild Umbria. It is so quiet and relaxing. The pool is amazing, and our hosts went beyond the call of duty to make us welcome. It is very well situated for visits to Assissi, Gubbio and Lake Trasimeno, but you may prefer to while away your stay by the pool enjoying the beautiful surroundings

Local points of interest from Alan Holpin

  • An oasis of silence and calm. You'll be disturbed only by the myriad sounds of birds and insects and the occasional barking of deer and scurrying of wild boar and porcupine. Perfect for writers and artists seeking solitude. Admire our dark skies.
  • Relax on your private terrace, or why not take a walk up through the woods to your totally private and secluded pool and sun deck which you do not share with anybody else. Both with glorious views and not overlooked by anything or anybody.
  • Lovers of historic towns are spoilt for choice with Assisi, Gubbio, Spoleto, Orvieto and Perugia all a short drive away. All the other glories of medieval central Italy are within easy reach. https://www.umbriatourism.it/en/web/umbria/things-to-see-and-do
  • Summer is Festa time! Every town and village has it's own festa of which the locals are extremely proud. Most notable are perhaps the 'festa dei Ceri' every 15th May in Gubbio, the local 'Festa del fuoco' on midsummer's eve, and the 'infiorata' at Spello.
  • The wild Apennine mountains are on our doorstep and offer endless mountaintop walks perfect for nature-lovers, walkers, and photographers. https://www.umbriatourism.it/en/hiking
  • Music lovers should not miss the annual festa of music that is Umbria Jazz. Held every year in July with a host of outdoor concerts, free and otherwise. Also Trasimeno Blues.
