The Experience

Wind up Umbria’s beautiful hills to arrive at the House on the Mountain. Strolling distance from a tiny hamlet (one church, one street, one restaurant), it has been restored with passion by its owners and is surrounded by forests and breezes.Rob and Betty discreetly occupy the first floor while the two apartments lie below, in the stables. Living spaces are wide and bright with doors to patios and a well-tended garden – patter from cooling pool to shady flat if it gets too hot outdoors. You are in the heart of Umbria’s pilgrim trails, immersed in landscapes of great beauty, yet close to producers of wine, olives and sheep cheeses; the owners are real foodies. It’s ten minutes by car to bars and groceries, and 50 minutes to history-rich Perugia.

Reviews

We absolutely loved our stay at Casa Sul Monte. The apartments had everything we needed and the kids made the most of the beautiful garden and pool. We really appreciated being off the main tourist track and experiencing the real Umbrian way of life. Rob & Betty were great hosts.

Casa sul Monte is beautifully restored, tastefully decorated and well equipped. The tranquility of the large garden and stunning views meant we were happy not going out but Casa sul Monte is well placed to visit Orvieto & Perugia but also, not to be missed, is the charming Lake Bolsena. Our hosts were generous and kind and whilst they lived in the property upstairs we were given a lot of space, they were always available if there was anything we needed (their recommendations of where to visit were spot on so take them!). We left full of happy memories, relaxed but energised.

We had a fabulous stay with Rob and Betty at their beautiful house. Decorated to a high standard & with everything you could need, and a lovely warm welcome too!! Rob and Betty even took us out to their favourite local restaurant!! The kids loved the pool, with adjacent bbq area, and there are lovely pine forest walks direct from the house. Lots of interesting places to explore nearby too. Must return someday!!!! Highly recommend.

This was a truly relaxing holiday set in a villa which is a home from home in the beautiful Umbrian hills. From the moment we arrived it was a joy. As a family comprising of two adults and a toddler we aspired to a simple holiday relaxing in a beautiful setting by a pool with quality time together. The weather was perfect and whilst the option to travel further afield to places such as Florence was a possibility in the end we stayed put venturing down to the village to sample the gastronomic delights of Juliano's family restaurant & a trip to the pizzeria. Rob and Betty are perfect hosts :-)

Location

The neighbourhood

Just 500m below tiny San Vito, you can walk to its restaurant and be welcomed by sleepy cats, friendly owners and authentic Umbrian dishes. Hire bikes or hike through marked trails in the forests and discover old chapels en route. San Venanzo (12km) holds all you need, while Orvieto, Perugia and Assisi are under an hour’s drive.

Local points of interest from Rob & Betty Davie

  • Less than 1 hour away (90 km) and not to be missed, the Cascata delle Marmore is a spectacular sight. 165 m high and built over 2000 years ago to help provide Rome with fresh water, it remains the highest man-made waterfall in the world.
  • Visit Todi, a medieval jewel of Umbria less than 40 km away, and on-route stop off at Monte Castello di Vibio, the 'near perfect' mediaeval hilltop town, to visit the 99 seated Teatro della Concordia, the world's smallest 'all'Italiana' theatre.
  • Favourite destinations include Perugia, Orvieto and Assisi, each less than 1 hour's drive, while Montefalco, Bevagna, Spello and Trevi can be enjoyed as a day-trip through the hills of Umbria, totalling approx. 150 km and 3 hours driving.
  • Food is the glue that binds Italy together, nowhere more so than in Umbria. Most local restaurants offer rustic regional food cooked to Nonna's traditional recipe from day fresh ingredients, always prepared with as much pride as passion, for you to enjoy!
  • Just 50 km away you will discover the magical Civita di Bagnoreggio. Perched high on crumbling cliffs this enchanted and gradually decaying town draws tourists from around the world so an early arrival gets you ahead of the crowd. Not to be missed!
  • We are surrounded by several excellent wineries that offer cellar tours, delicious nibbles and guided tastings to help discover and appreciate the unique qualities and rich heritage of Umbria's many often unknown wines.

Introducing

Rob & Betty Davie

Rob once worked in interior design, and Betty was a teacher. Warm-hearted, open and generous, lovers of food, history and this small community, they found and renovated a large house to accommodate numerous visiting grandchildren. When guests rent the stables, they give you exclusive use of the garden and pool - and Betty promises something delicious when you arrive.
