The Experience

Fling back the shutters and be greeted by a view that has changed little in 400 years – an ancient hamlet complete with castle and ornate hunting lodge, overlooked by vineyards. The rustic properties here – mostly workers’ cottages – have been simply and elegantly brought up to date, preserving their clean lines and a sense of light and space. Bedrooms and living areas are comfortable and unfussy, kitchens and bathrooms are modern, neat and clean.

Each has outdoor space – heaven to sit in the shade of a tree and glug the estate’s prize winning wines. If you need advice, Guerrina, who meets and greets, can be found in the busy estate wine shop – she can also arrange a supermarket run before you arrive. There’s an open air pool to cool off in and a bistro with a kitchen garden for delicous meals using local ingredients.

Book onto a cookery course with a private chef or hire an e-bike and head for the delightful Euganean Hills.

Location

The neighbourhood

You'll feel immersed in the Po Valley countryside and feel part of the medieval-style agricultural estate. Admire the view of the Mottolo castle, the surrounding vineyards and a secret garden, or the hilly skyline. Taste and buy the wines produced on the estate, eat well in the bistro, head to Selvazzano for award-winning gelato, buy herbal teas and honey from the shop at the Abbey of Praglia.

Local points of interest from Alice Spimpolo

  • The wine produced in the estate has won several important awards: do not miss a free tasting and a visit to the collection of rural tools, to get a taste of real Veneto countryside!
  • The 24 hole golf course La Montecchia is one of the most renowned in Veneto and the guests of Castellana are entitled to special discounts.
  • A tip for gourmets: the one Michelin star Montecchia restaurants is a few hundred meters away from Castellana; try the "Menù degustazione" at a special price!
  • Visit the stunning Abbey of Praglia, where monks still live and make honey and natural cosmetics
  • On a rainy day, you can pop in in one of the nearby spas, in Abano Terme or Montegrotto, and cuddle yourself with a massage and a reinvigorating bath in thermal water.
  • Padova, a medieval jewel, is just 15 min drive from Castellana: make sure you do not miss the city wonders, such as Giotto's Scrovegni Chapel, the Palazzo della Ragione, or the university. Mix with locals and shop at the market in Piazza delle Erbe!
