The Experience

Couples will be very happy here and there’s no question of roughing it – the whole place has a decidedly elegant and aristocratic feel to it, which you’ll discover as you sip your drinks beneath the pillared portico overlooking your private, tree-fringed meadow. You’ll only encounter the outside world when you stroll through the woods to the golf club to use the pool – your folly is hidden away in the estate’s rambling 120 hectares of fields, forest and hills at the end of a country lane. The grounds are yours to roam at will, but you can also join a guided tour to explore the mysterious grottos beneath the villa at the centre of the estate.

The neighbourhood

It may feel blissfully isolated here, but you’re only a half hour drive from Padua and Vicenza, cities chock full of Palladian splendour and enough bars and eateries to please all. If you really want to push the boat out, Venice is an hour away. Closer to home, there’s a restaurant at the golf club and a supermarket 2km up the road. An extensive guide in your villa is full of local info but check with the estate office if you need more advice.

Francesca Papafava Antonini dei Carraresi

Charming Contessa Francesca Papafava studied African Studies at SOAS in London and now runs the ancient family estate with aplomb. Her great great grandmother’s brother was Pietro Savorgnan di Brazza, an explorer who founded the city of Brazzaville in the Republic of Congo. When the Contessa is not on hand to welcome guests, friendly Anna and Saba will take very good care of you.
