The Experience

This red-brick Venetian-style villa dating from 1720 was once owned by the Guiccioli family – Lord Byron spent time here during his affair with Teresa Guiccioli – and it is filled with family heirlooms, books and original art.

Elaine and her daughter live here too and encourage you to feel at home – choose from several drawing rooms with open fires, one with a TV, or comfy chairs on the terrace with views over the estate. Breakfast on homemade cakes, jams, fruit from the estate, locally sourced cheeses, ham and eggs, served indoors on separate tables by the fireplace or out on the terrace; you can stay in for candlelit dinners in the evening too.

Explore the Po Delta by boat, bike or horseback – it’s home to thousands of flamingos and 300 bird species. The nearest village, Taglio del Po, is just 2 km away and has a couple of restaurants, or there are authentic fish restaurants about 25 minutes’ drive away.

Thank you for dedicating so much time to us during our stay. It goes without saying that the place is amazing. Your elegance and humour make the place one of a kind. We were immersed in a time where the values, the hard work and dedications are embedded in every corner. My wife and I were charmed by the whole atmosphere and we will definitely be back as soon as possible. See you soon

The villa has comfortable rooms, an impeccable service but mostly it’s brings you back to an old time at the outlet of the river Po’ The food is natural and local, definitely delicious, simple and elegant.

A stay at Ca Zen will delight you with the natural elegance and stylishness of this house, the charm and knowledge of the two lovely lady owners and its stunning location in the Po Delta Nature Reserve which is unique as it offers not just peace and quietness but an authentic chance to go on a leisurely bike and boat trip, sample delicious fish cuisine, or just stay in and relax in the grounds or one of the lovely sitting rooms.

The neighbourhood

The estate is set near the banks of the Po River in the Po Delta nature reserve, one of Europe's largest wetland areas and a UNESCO World Heritage site. This is a paradise for birdwatchers, cyclists and walkers but also those wishing to explore the sandy beaches and/or the botanic gardens of Rosolina Mare (30 minutes) or art cities such as Ferrara (one hour), Venice, Ravenna and Padua (1 hour 30 minutes), or pretty towns like Chioggia, Adria and Comacchio (less than an hour).

Local points of interest from Silvia Mancin

  • Ca' Zen is located in the heart of the Po Delta, one or maximum 2 hours away from some of the most beautiful cities in the world: Venice, Padua, Ravenna, Ferrara, Verona, Vicenza.
  • The Po Delta is 400 km² large and is formed by 6 branches, it has an extraordinary variety of animal and vegetable species, and is one of the largest wet areas in the Mediterranean and Adriatic area.
  • Comacchio is a lovely town located just over the Veneto border in Emilia Romagna. The origin of this town is late Roman: it was built on 13 small Islands, connected to each other by bridges.
  • Our beaches in the Po Delta are long and wide and sandy, easily accessible both to adults and children. It is fascinating to get to the beaches by boat, canoe, bike, on horse back!
  • The Beaches of Boccasette, Rosolina, Porto Caleri and Barricata can be reached in 20 min-drive from Ca’ Zen, small boats will take you to Islands on the sea, such as Isola Del Faro and Scanno Cavallari, and Scanno Boa!
  • Polesine is the result of the perfect interaction between nature and man: being naturally below the level of the Sea, mainly lives on Agriculture and Fish commerce.

Elaine is originally from Ireland but moved into the house about 50 years or so ago after marrying Pericle Avanzo of the Casalicchio Avanzos family, only the third owners of the estate since it was built. As it was previously used in the summer it wasn't fully furnished, so she used her own family heirlooms from Ireland as well as treasures found in the attic. Elaine looks after guests along with her daughter Maria Adelaide, who studied music and law but since 2006 has been overseeing renovations to the east and west wing and self-catering cottages in the grounds.
