Fondamenta Misericordia

Stay in this bright third-floor apartment with views to Murano and San Michele; you’ll feel nicely Italian rubbing shoulders with the locals

2 beds

2 bedrooms

Sleeps 4

Sip your aperitvo on the rooftop balcony after a day walking around the northern quarter. It’s a little visited area so you can act like a local – visit foodie markets; stop off for lunch at a little osteria; gawp at churches with glorious frescoes.

Follow the Grand Canal past the Ca’ d’Oro – one of the most stunning palaces of Cannaregio – into the busy centre. Or hop on a traghetto (public gondola) across the canal to visit the vibrant Rialto Fish Market behind the infamous bridge.

Your apartment is perfect to escape all the hustle and bustle: a comfortable space to cook with options to eat inside around the large dining table or outside on the covered terrace. You can barbecue your fish on the big outside roof deck and soak up the views across Venice and the lagoon.

The neighbourhood

Cannaregio is a quiet area in northern Venice where real Venetians go about their lives; rub shoulders with them at the San Leonardo Market. Within a short walk of the apartment is baroque palace Palazzo Lezze; Scuola Grande di Misericordia with its fascinating art exhibitions; and the church of Sant'alvise with three frescoes painted by Gianbattista Tiepolo. Seek out the Jewish quarter, the oldest Jewish ghetto in the world, and visit the museum for guided synagogue tours. There are bakeries, a bottle shop and a string of good eateries on your doorstep: Paradiso Perdutto, Osteria da Rioba, Trattoria Misericordia, Al Timon. Come for the Biennale between May and November.

Local points of interest from Masha Blumin

  • All points of interest are within walking distance. Piazza San Marco with its Cathedral, Palace of Doges, Campanile and most famous museums is a nice 20 minutes walk from the house. Go on and you will come to Giardini and Arsenale for the Biennale.
  • Rialto bridge is just 6 minutes away. You cross the bridge or take a traghetto ferry( costs 2€) and you are in San Polo. Visiting Rialto market on Saturday is a great event. If you are lucky there can be an antique market as well.
  • The part of Cannaregio which is closer to the lagoon is authentically Venetian. Small canals, churches, palaces next to simple houses from the 50s. From vaporetto station ORTO one can go directly to Lido (25 min), Murano, Burano and other islands.
  • Right on the Fondamenta Misericordia there is the famous Iron Bridge - the entrance to the oldest Ghetto of the world. It is a very special small area of Venice and the Museum as well as the Synagoge are surely worth visiting.
  • The way to the cathedral of San Giovanni e Paolo (concerts) and Ospedale leads via Church Santa Maria dei Miracoli - a jewel hidden among canals and narrow streets.During Biennale (from May till November) there are many art exhibitions open in Cannaregio.
  • Fondamenta Misericordia is famous for its restaurants. COOP and SPAR (both very close and open everyday until very late) are great for shopping if you prefer to eat at home. You find all practical information in a folder.
