The
Experience
The countryside feels sparsely populated and a bit untamed here, even though you’re on the edge of a hamlet – trees cover the slopes and you can look out from the hillside towards the highest peak in mainland Portugal. Three lovely terraces in the gardens below the house provide great spots for reading or writing, as sunlight glitters through branches and the land drops into the valley below. This was once the country home of a landowner from a nearby village – above the stairs leading to the first floor is a magnificent window looking across to hilly summits, and bedrooms are bright and sleek, with granite walls and polished wood floors. Energetic Basque and Portuguese owners Iker and Marta lived in London for 15 years, honing their hospitality and catering skills, before following their B&B dream to this eco-friendly house. Stride out on walking trails that pass the gate, drive three miles to the nearest small town for picnic ingredients and restaurants, and a few miles further to the eclectic Caramulo art and motor museum. Porto airport is 90 minutes’ drive away.

Most wonderful place and hosts. Excellent breakfast and you can order dinners if you like and those meals were outstanding. The people are friendly and helpful and gave us lovely tips what to do and which places to visit. An authentic Portugal experience and highly recommended and we will be back for more. We have enjoyed it very much. Best place and hospitality during our two weeks in Portugal.

Location
The neighbourhood
Local points of interest from Marta Alexandra Salvador Almeida
- Caramulo Art and Classic Vintage Car Museum is just a short scenic drive away, you can appreciate a Picasso and a Rolls Royce there! Its mountain range also offers some of the most typical Portuguese villages and stunning views of Central North Portugal.
- Enjoy the numerous walking trails that can be found just outside our front door and surrounding areas! The marked 18km "Orange Tree Route" proves to be very popular amongst walkers and mountain bikers. The shorter "Linen Route" is also great to unwind.
- Ecopista do Dão - The old railway between Santa Comba Dão and Viseu is now a 49km path perfect for cycling, walking and admiring nature. Vineyards, old railway station, tunnels, bridges and a beautiful scenery awaits you at the heart of Dão wine region.
- 20 mins drive from the house is the city of Viseu with its beautiful cathedral, churches and museums. Do not skip a well worthy visit to the Grão Vasco Museum and loose yourself in the medieval historic centre with its narrow streets and traditional shops.
- Coimbra and its ancient university (one of the oldest in Europe) is less than an hour away. The beautiful 18th century Joanina Library is a must. Feel the buzzing university life around the city and experience the Coimbra Fado in the enchanting old town.
- The old town of Lamego (1 hr away) offers much to do: From visiting the renowned pilgrimage church of Nossa Senhora dos Remedios, the 11th century castle, the gothic cathedral, etc. to tasting worldwide awarded wines at 300 year old Quinta da Pacheca.

Iker and Marta are absolute foodies (one a former chef, the other a restaurant manager) so if you like food you'll love it here. homemade jams at breakfast with the freshest yogurt and glorious granola. Good bread too and local hams and cheeses. The house is relaxed and fun and Dexter the dog is a delightful addition to the whole experience.
