The Experience

Negotiate the hairpin bends, park in a cul de sac and clamber down a steep path to this traditional slate and stone cottage surrounded by eucalyptus and chestnut trees in the beautiful Serra do Açor mountains.

Antonio, who lives in the next village up, looks after the property and shares his local knowledge with you. Find an open-plan kitchen and living area with a starter supply of tea, coffee and olive oil, and a cosy fireplace with logs provided.

Sit out on the terrace or by the swimming pool for soaring views of mountain and stream far from civilisation but it’s only a 20-minute walk to the nearest village Chãs de Égua and café. You can also hike to Piódão, the jewel in the crown of the ‘schist’ villages, in 40 minutes – ask Antonio about a scenic route – or drive in 12 minutes.

This review is late in coming, September 2018, but no less enthusiastic. Foz dos Barreiros is a fabulous cottage plunked down in the middle of a remote and exceptionally picturesque countryside. Sandra's stylish and comfortable home is the perfect setting to enjoy the peace and quiet of nature. Piodao is another historic schist village. The natural spring at Foz d'Egua is a refreshing, delightful oasis. We enjoyed breakfast & dinner on the veranda everyday. Sandra was very kind & her father very helpful. House has everything you could need & area astoundingly beautiful.Wonderful spot to relax.

A spectacular retreat to counteract the frenzy of city life. It felt like a privilege to be immersed in such an ancient landscape with the friendliest of people and most helpful of hosts. Thanks to some very good instructions with a photographic guide from our host we were confident enough (I should add I have no head for heights) to walk to the historical village an hour away. Very enjoyable with tremendous views! And inside the house , especially the bedrooms , felt comfortable and stylish . A perfect balance to the extreme landscape outside. And the pool - a refreshing finishing touch .

Foz dos Barreiros is a beautiful little house in a bright, spectacular setting, clinging to the side of a valley so steep it's more like a ravine. Lovely walks in every direction, two good bars within walking distance, the sound of the stream, and a neat terrace so you can eat out in most weathers. But the main thing of course is people. Sandra was easy to deal with, friendly and efficient (when we had a small problem she fixed it immediately). And the neighbours were lovely, despite our shameful lack of Portuguese. We loved the cafe at Chas da Egua - real charm and good food. We'll be back

This was quite simply one of the most beautiful places I have ever stayed. The views from the terrace and the pool are breathtaking. The pool was clean and the property is furnished inside to a high standard, with modern bathrooms and fast wifi. It's very remote (well over an hour's drive to the nearest large supermarket) but the village of Vide has two small shops for essentials. A gorgeous getaway.

We had a wonderful fortnight in this beautiful valley. The lovingly restored house was perfect for our family; fully equipped, tasteful and comfortable. We never tired of the views from the terraces, watching the abundant wildlife and the changing light and weather, and we enjoyed the refreshing pool immensely. There is plenty to explore in the local villages and countryside, as well as day trips further afield to the peaks and national parks. Sandra and her family were incredibly helpful and friendly throughout our stay and I would thoroughly recommend this delightful place.

Wonderful – the perfect retreat. Views better than the pictures and delicious swimming in the pool.

We had an amazing time here - the setting is stunning and so peaceful, the house is very comfortable and has everything you need. The pool is perfect for hot summer days too. We will certainly be back!

A place so wonderful, I want to keep it a secret, Foz dos Barreiros‏ is a lush retreat well off the beaten track. Surrounded by olive terraces, mountain vistas, waterfalls & wildflowers, the cottage is all the more appealing for its luxurious furnishings & astounding bedroom views. There’s plenty to do –vineyards for wine tasting, freshwater swimming & winding mountain walks (the one to nearby village Piado is particularly beautiful). But I’d recommend plenty of time for simply stopping, sipping local wine on the glorious terrace & watching the bees go by.

If you want an escape, to totally switch off from the world, and get back to nature, then Foz dos Barreiros is the place for you. I can’t recommend it more. The village of Foz dos Barreiros, the namesake for the house itself, is delightful. The house is perched on a terrace and overlooks a valley of olive trees, vines, grasses, wildflowers and even a waterfall. The house has very recently been rebuilt and is tastefully decorated. The main bedroom is particularly special. The kitchen has everything you need to be self-sufficient, including a starter kit of tea & coffee etc.

The neighbourhood

The nearest small grocery stores to the house are in Vide (16 minutes' drive) or Ponte das Tres Estradas (30 minutes) and the nearest supermarkets are in Oliveira de Hospital, a 45-minute drive. Portugal’s historic ‘schist’ villages, named after the stone traditionally used for building in the area, are one of the country’s best-kept secrets and offer an authentic glimpse into rural life in this part of the country. Piódão, which is considered the most charming of them all, is only 6 km away – take the scenic route on foot and treat yourself to sheepskin slippers, a wool jumper or local honey, enjoy a little meal at O Solar dos Pachecos, or a beer at O Fontinha.

Local points of interest from Sandra da Conceição Fontinha - Colliander

  • Quinta de São Tiago is a beautiful vineyard 50 minutes away by car where you are able to not only taste their delicious wine but also the locally made olive oil, cherry liquor and jam and honey. Great place to have lunch too!
  • Besides having your own private natural pool you are just three minutes away from another (public) natural pool with water coming straight from the mountain top and completely clear where you can have a few hours of fun in the summer months.
  • Piodão, which is a 10 minute drive away is one of the 16 Historic Villages in Portugal and is renown for having preserved its centuries old schist houses and character.
  • In Chãs de Égua, the village high up in the mountains, you can have a stroll and admire the labyrinth of middle aged paths and join the locals for a chat or a drink in the local bar with amazing views and buy locally produced honey and 'aguardente'.
  • Serra da Estrela, the highest mountain chain in Portugal is just 45 minutes away with spectacular views from the highest point of Portugal.
  • Coimbra, third largest city with an old medieval centre and one of the oldest universities in Europe is well worth a visit. It is 99km away, about one and a half hour drive.
