The Experience

This boutique-style big white quinta sits in a very sleepy old village – eat in the dining room which opens onto a swish veranda so you can observe the comings and goings of the neighbours. Wander down to the local cafe which in typical rural Portuguese style is only open when the owner feels like it!

You’re well fed: Jack’s wife Anna was born here and her mother tends a vegetable and fruit garden in the village so much of her produce ends up on the table for ‘surprise dinners’ – no menu, choice of fish or meat, everything fresh, seasonal and delicious. At breakfast you’ll have freshly-squeezed juice from the oranges in the garden – all year round.

Walk marked trails, long or short, which Jack has printed for guests (he knows the area well and can advise on much to see and do,) join mountain bike routes (hire bikes here) or take a packed lunch and head off for the day. The nearest restaurant, Toino Moleiro is in Tabua just a 20-minute drive and with a reputation for fresh grilled fish and meat. Or just stay put for a fabulous bird-filled garden and a lazy pool area with many sofas. There’s also a brand new spa which you can book privately.

Reviews

Lovely old house, tastefully restored in a beautiful rural location in Central Portugal. We had lovely rooms, large (bedroom and bathrooms), spotlessly clean with great views and a sitting out area. Superb swimming pool, drinks/snacks (honestly box), and good spa services. Lovely walks directly from the House. Great place to chill and walk miles from the normal tourist destinations.

Very romantic, rustic country house Very beautiful, small, charming luxurious hotel in a quiet countryside location. Very nicely appointed, large rooms, wood floors, spectacular breakfast in an absolutely gorgeous dining room, former olive producing estate, lots of charm. Grounds are immaculate, very well maintained. Unfortunately, we were not there during warm weather, since the pool looked so inviting. Has spa facilities, which we did not use, but am sure they would be of the same calibre as the rest of the house. Drove into Coimbra in about 45 minutes. Near a schist village we found fascinating

Beautiful and immaculate hotel, very accommodating hosts, lovely food. Room very spacious and well-equipped with gorgeous views. Really comfy chairs on terrace outside the room. Delicious fresh orange juice at breakfast. Surprise menu different every day and very tasty. We also asked for wine recommendations and all were very good.

If you like swish, tickety-boo places (even in rural Portugal) then you'll be happy here. It's boutique style rather than authentic but it is bang in the middle of a sleepy old village. The garden is filled with birds, fruit trees, a cooling pool and lots of places to sit and chill out.

Nicola, Bristol

We spent two nights here as part of a road trip from UK to the Algarve. Although we have visited Portugal many times we had never visited Central Portugal and hadn't realised how lovely it was. Jack and his wife have created a very special place at Quinta de Palmeira. The interiors are stylish, modern and comfortable but retain the traditional charm. The pool, gardens and terrace provide delightful places to relax. We enjoyed two fabulous dinners cooked expertly by Jack's wife and Jack, himself, was on hand to offer advice on trips to see the surrounding countryside. Fabulous!

Jill, Romsey

Fabulous hotel, its unfortnate that timing meant that we could not send long enough to enjoy the pool area. Room was very comfortable and roomy with all the facilities we needed. Dinner and breakfast were both perfect with excellent food. Service was courteous but not intrusive' Lovely building and a great part of portugal, Will definitely stay longer next time!

Location

The neighbourhood

Cerdeira is a typical rural village in central Portugal - nothing much happens! But it's well worth pottering down to have a walk around - when the cafe is open it's filled with chattering locals so have a coffee while you people-watch. Piodao, 15k in the car, is one of the oldest villages in Portugal, totally preserved with a church, museum, hanging bridge and secret sanctuary. A ten-minute drive will take you to a huge nature park - a Bio genetic reserve - with waterfalls, ancient (named) trees and then the river. The brand new spa here is tempting and the pool and garden area are hard to leave. Don't go anywhere without consulting friendly Jack.

Local points of interest from Jack Brouns

  • Surrounded by orange trees and olive groves, with the peaks of the Serra do Açor and the Serra da Estrela just beyond, Quinta da Palmeira makes its home in a region famous for gastronomy and open-air parties.
  • For many travelers it´s the perfect stopover between Portugal’s main coastal cities, which is an great opportunity to settle a couple days into the laid-back countryside lifestyle.
  • Nature is close at hand. The woods are sprinkled with waterfall-fed pools, the rivers good for swimming and canoeing, and the mountains suited to bikers and hikers of all skill levels.
  • The historic city of Pióadão is nearby, too, with its famous stone houses forming a picturesque jumble on the hillside.
  • Closer by, the hotel’s pool sparkles in that particularly sparkly way that pools under the bright southern European sunlight tend to do.
  • Waterfalls in protected landscape Fraga da Pena; Hiking in protected landscape area in Mata da Magaraça, visit the Palace and the National Forest of the Serra do Bussaco; Visit in Coimbra one of the oldest university libraries of Europe.
