The
Experience

Arriving here feels special – meander along a one-way road from Sintra (seven kilometres) through the fairytale woods of the Sintra-Cascais natural park to a little cottage at the top of a steep lane. You’re surrounded by forest and the views from the big stone terrace are lovely.

You need to go to the nearest village, Vinagre, for your basics – it’s a five-minute walk but the road is very narrow. There are plenty of fish and seafood restaurants on the coast (20-minute drive) – Praia das Macas is popular with locals; it has a golden sandy beach, enough waves for surfers and a lively daily market.

Bring a haul back from the market to cook on the barbecue. Open the French windows from the kitchen and the living/dining room and gather round the table for a late night al fresco supper.

Reviews

Just arrived home in Belgium, which means that our holidays are over. We wanted to thank you for your hospitality and the warm welcome in the luxurious apartment in Colares. We enjoyed staying there and visited the National Palace, Pena and Montserrate, plus Cascais, and of course the wonderful city of Lisboa.

Many thanks to Irene for her warm welcome and very helpful tips on what to do and see in and around Sintra. The apartment was beautifully presented and extremely comfortable. The location was very convenient for the historical palaces of Sintra and also the wonderful coastal spots. We loved this part of Portugal and will certainly return.

The house is charming and homely. I felt very well and welcome from the beginning. The beds were pristine and super-comfy. And, you can even see the ocean in the distance over the hills. Not to mention the kitchen. Really well equipped and usable. Went with a three year old, and there were toys in the house. Great. Also Irene, the host, super friendly, offered to let us use 2 mountain bikes stored in a shed outside. Wow.

A small, quaint bungalow, with a wonderful patio making a perfect outdoor extension. It’s in a great position in a small hamlet and surrounded by a Nature Park but close to one of the most extraordinary towns in Europe – Sintra. It’s also next door to fine surfing beaches and a stunning park. Lisbon is a short ride away. A must for your next holiday!

We really enjoyed the location of Casa da Capella as it was close by so many other towns and important tourist areas. We felt very safe at the Casa. The mercado down the hill in Colares was great and had the best wines and supplies to make some great dinners. Our hostess was very friendly and informative.Thankyou very much for your help and hospitality. The house had so many amenities and we loved the feel of living in a cozy house amongst the locals.

Location

The neighbourhood

This is a winning location in a tiny hamlet inside the Sintra-Cascais natural park. The coast is 20 minutes in one direction for swimming, surfing (some of the best in Europe) and seafood. You’ll find a shed with beach essentials. Sintra is about the same in the other direction - it’s easy to see how it got the title ‘Disneyland for grown ups’ – the blend of architectural styles on show is mindboggling and it’s fun to spend the day visiting the palaces, castles and grand villas. There are some wonderful walks or hikes through the park.

  • Close to Sintra World Surfing Reserve, and near to Praia Grande, a surf spot where you can rent surfboards and get private lessons
