The Experience

A treat to be in the centre of the city, but down a side street protected from trams. Step inside a superbly renovated 18th-century coach house to find two snug apartments, each with its own entrance. These are not view-filled spaces – ground-floor windows face the street – but are comfortable and cosy and protected from the world.

The living area and kitchen are open plan and you’ll find everything you need to cook along with cheese, milk, ham and fresh oranges. Lovely Teresa thinks of everything, lives nearby and is a tour guide who knows all the off-the-beaten-track places and the fado restaurants and clubs; she also leaves everything you need for breakfast out every day.

Shopping is a delight here; from local millinery to high-fashion stores and even if you don’t buy anything it’s great fun window shopping.

A lovely characterful place, well refurbished. Teresa and her son looked after us well with a great choice of food for the breakfasts. Only one negative, no opening window on ground floor so without the door open, poor ventilation.

Ian, Ipswich

Teresa is the ultimate hostess! Our stay in her beautiful apartment was enhanced by her insights and recommendations.

Mary, San francisco

A beautifully restored and furnished apartment - modern feel in a venerable setting. Cleaned and tidied every day. The food provided went well beyond the promise of a nice breakfast. Teresa was kindness and attentiveness personified, and made sure everything was to our satisfaction and met our daily needs. Even to the extent of ferrying us to the airport on the day of our departure because of taxi problems due to the Lisbon Festival. She is a treasure! The apartment is ideally situated - in a quiet cul-de-sac on the edge of the Alfama district - two mins from the Cathedral.

Wonderful b&b, Teresa is a marvellous hostess nothing is too much trouble and she is most helpful with information. Delicious breakfast provided and a beautiful mezzanine apartment with everything detail thought through and all that one wants provided. The position is excellent on the edge of the Alfada on the tram 28 route and sightseeing is very easy from here. Teresa helped us with restaurant information and where to see Fado we highly recommend this place and would love to come again.

June, Shaftesbury

To me what is special is the fact that the property has been restored in a way that you can understand what it used to be, with the bear bricks and fabulous ceiling. Location is great for a city holiday.

Marilyn, Sawday's inspector

Excellent standard of care and attention. Good breakfasts each day, and Teresa also left supper for us a couple times. Good standard of accomodation in well restored building, very close to cathedral and city centre. Thoroughly enjoyable visit.

Philip, Salisbury

Just home from our second visit to Casa Das Merceeiras where we spent seven nights, and that says it all! Teresa is great as is the accommodation - in our opinion much better than a hotel. Lots of help and advice from Teresa on places to visit and restaurants to try of which there are many. We will be back!

Loved our stay in Lisbon. Teresa is a wonderful host and very friendly, and knowledgeable about Lisbon. Casa Das Merceeiras is a great place if you don’t want a chain hotel experience. We found it comfortable, clean, welcoming and well situated. Teresa goes out of her way to help and make your stay a great one. She is available by text or phone. Perfect for us.

Teresa has a lovely maisonette right in the heart of the old Alfama district, near many wonderful sights, the cathedral and St George's castle. The maisonette was clean, quiet and comfortable and she provides a wonderful breakfast for the guests every morning. She is a lovely lady and a trained tour guide. We thoroughly recommend her place!

Jessica, Lewes

Teresa is a great host who goes out of her way to help and advise. The accommodation was very tasteful, surprisingly quiet and very well placed for exploring the city. Teresa provided us with plenty of good vegetarian choices for breakfast.

Barbara, Castle douglas

Just stayed six nights at Casa des Mercieeras. It was just as described by Alistair Sawday's. Teresa gave us excellent advice as to where to visit and how to get around. She also made sure the place was cleaned each day when we were out and breakfast supplied was excellent. The perfect venue for visiting Lisbon and we plan to return.

Alan, Kingston upon thames

Apartment and location exactly as described. Teresa paid attention to all details and our comfort.. Placed in the heart of the Alfama district with its narrow streets and alleys. Planty of small estaurants nearby , many with Fado music Tram 28 stops very close, metros are a longer walk, but taxis are plentiful in Lisbon. You need to be fit to walk this area of Lisbon!

Janette, Somerset

Christel, Paris

Teresa on arrival is very welcoming, helpful and informative. One senses that she really wants you to enjoy and discover Lisboa. The house despite being so central is very quiet and has been, by Teresa, very lovingly and tastefully absolute pleasure to reside in. We appreciated the tasty and varied food ( oranges for juicing ) left daily, enough for breakfast and more. We had a wonderful and very uplifting weeks stay, thanks to Teresa, her lovely house and inspirational Lisboa. We highly recommend and hope one day to return. Carole and Wilf London/Frankfurt.

What a lovely place to stay! The knowledgeable and charming Teresa greeted us and spent time advising us on the best places to eat, how to travel and, even the best local wines to buy. The apartment was immaculately clean, stylishly decorated; on a quiet road, convenient for the local tram stop. The atmospheric streets of Alfama were just outside the door. Every day we returned with great anticipation for the fresh fruit (including oranges to juice), delicious breads and cake that Teresa had left for us. Our homemade breakfasts turned into feasts of fresh Portugese produce. A real gem!

Trish, Aberystwyth

I stayed at Casa das Merceeiras with two girlfriends for three nights. Teresa could not have been more welcoming. it is a lovely apartment situated in the old town in a very quiet back street but close to places to eat. We had a wonderful breakfast each morning with a cleaner coming in every day to make up the beds etc and Teresa made sure that we had all the information that we needed in order to help us get the most out of our time in Lisbon. The apartment is very well furnished and comfortable and we would most definitely stay there again.

Mary, Bridgwater somerset

One of the most friendly welcomes and a magic small place in the heart of Lisbon with all you need. All you can read in the comments is true and Theresas speaks perfectly English.

Olaf, Konstanz

All the good things we had read were absolutely true. Comfortable, immaculate and convenient apartments, expert and helpful advice on arrival and throughout our visit - plus directions to a wonderful fish restaurant. Theresa deserves her reputation!

This was a wonderful place to stay. The ceiling is spectacular. Teresa supplies delicious cheeses, bread and fruit for breakfast. They come in during the day and make your bed and clean the studio. She also helped us negotiate the trams, underground and train so we could really explore the area and will help you with dinner reservations too if required. I can't recommend this enough.

We stayed at Casa das Merceeiras in late August. We thoroughly enjoyed the visit. The buildings have been sensitively refurbished retaining the amazing brick ceilings. The location is central and tucked away. The breakfasts provided were tasty especially the home-made jam. Our host Teresa had arranged especially for fans to help us with the heat, and made us feel very welcome.

The neighbourhood

You’re right in the middle of things; a ten-minute stroll will take you to city centre hotspots. Gawp at the majesty of the Cathedral and Saint George Castle before recovering in one of the many street-side restaurants. Slightly further afield you can tick off your Portuguese itinerary with a wander at the Torre de Belém, a ubiquitous ride on Tram 28 and a search for bargains at Feira da Ladra.

Local points of interest from Teresa Albarran

  • The house is in the historic heart of Lisbon, 5 min walk to Saint George Castle
  • Near the cathedral; 10 mins walk to Rossio Square, the main shopping area
  • Shops and great Portuguese restaurants within walking distance from the house
  • The famous tram has a stop nearby the house
  • Artisan craft shop next door
  • Alfama District next to the house- the old Kasbah of Lisbon

Teresa Albarran

Teresa is the ultimate host and takes great pleasure in sharing all her local secrets. After a stint in Alentejo running a hotel she came across this old coach house and instantly fell in love. She has spent two years lovingly restoring the maze of buildings - the outcome is modern and fresh with more than a nod to its heritage. Ask her about local fado bars, her favourite restaurants and where to get the best feijoada.
