The
Experience

Down a cobbled alley on a steepish hill is Casa Santana. From the second-floor living room a magical view sweeps across tiled rooftops and shining river to the famous Rossio Square. There’s a great little kitchen with chunky bar stools and an up-in-the-attic feel. Bed linen and towels are immaculate and all you might want is here: books, toys, DVDs, stuff for the beach, vinho verde in the fridge, a laptop with WiFi. On arrival, Austin will give you a tour of the local area and, if you’re interested, will suggest volunteering opportunities with local homeless and conservation charities. And fado singer Amalia Rodrique’s nephew offers tours and cookery classes: learn to make arroz de marisco (seafood rice) – or, if you’re feeling flush, let him cook for you. Restaurants, bars, shops and history lie down the hill and the beach is a train ride away.

Location

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from The owner Austin

  • Our historic parish, Pena, is moments from the Rossio (Lisbon's main plaza), but it’s a family neighborhood, home to Embassies and grassy parks: a village in the heart of Lisbon.
  • There is a grocery store and several cafés within easy walking distance of the houses. The owner of our local mercado is something of a wine buff, and can help you get to know Portuguese wines.
  • The center of Lisbon, St Jorge’s Castle, the River Tejo and the train station to Sintra are all within a few kilometers, and from the Rossio metro station, or 24 hour taxi stand, you can reach almost any point in the Lisbon.
  • For families with kids, we’re happy to point out the several playgrounds nearby. We also stock the houses with guide books, phrase books and a collection of brochures on local attractions for all ages.
  • In this Historically Protected Neighbourhood the streets have hardly changed in the last few hundred years. Residents from centuries past, including Amalia Rodrigues and Luis de Camoes, would probably still recognize them.
  • Lisbon is an amazing city, with something for everyone. Let us know what you’re interests are, and we’re happy to help you plan. We never get tired of watching people fall in love with Lisbon!
