The Experience

The landscape of Portugal’s second city has changed over the centuries but this 50-hectare estate on the banks of the river Uima has stood firm. Rhododendron House has a real feeling of history about it, its 18th century charm and character intact. It takes its name from the well-kept walled garden that surrounds it, which contains a ravishing display of trees and flowers, with hidden courtyards, secret arbours, fountains and waterfalls. There’s a lovely pool too where you can soak up the sun.Continental Breakfasts are taken in the cool of the guest sitting room, or on a nearby terrace in the summer. You’re a 25-minute drive from the city centre for good restaurants and the whole Douro Valley is wine-tasting country.

Absolutely delightful place to stay, once you find it. Don't let this put you off, as Antonio is very happy to meet you and lead the way, we were close by. Once found, it is convenient for visiting Porto, but it would be so easy just to stay and relax, explore the beautiful gardens, planted and named, by the owners' father. The house is lovely, delicious breakfasts taken on the terrace with far reaching views. The comfortable bedroom and bathroom are spacious. There is a house to rent a little distance away from the main house with a swimming pool for everyone's use.

A very relaxing stay in beautiful gardens. Room and bathroom well appointed and serviced daily. Excellent continental breakfast. Antonio speaks quite good English and was very helpful. The entry to the winding private road was hard to find and needs a signpost. Ring just before you arrive so they can guide you in to this secluded grand estate. Well worth a stay.

The neighbourhood

Once you leave the estate, you’ll need a car to get around – the Douro Valley isn’t walking country, but happily it is wine country, and vineyard tours are top of the agenda. The nearest restaurants are 3km away on the far bank of the Douro, but serious eaters head for Oporto. A 25-minute drive gets you to the city centre, with world class restaurants, 1000 years of stunning architecture, and lashings of delicious Port.

Eduardo Moura e Sá

Eduardo, friendly and charming, inherited the quinta from his father in 2017, and is gradually restoring the estate’s grounds and buildings. His family have lived here for more than 300 years, and their history is inextricably linked with the house and garden. When Eduardo is not around, friendly caretakers Antonio and Emilia live on site to help you.
