The Experience

A great spot for this natty place, an easy walk to the centre of town or a nearby leafy park and with superb views over Porto and the river Douro. Each bedroom is uniquely themed and named after a famous avant-garde mover and shaker; some are larger than others but all have sleek lines, good lighting, top quality linen, brand new mattresses and of course a link to each eponymous celebrity from the world of art, literature or science. Bathrooms are gleaming with marble and mirrors – some have that view; towels are thick. You can lounge on the terraces, cool off in the pool, visit their own spa and eat in their own restaurant Digby (both open to members of the public too) where Portuguese food is served with aplomb. Don’t forget to make the most of Porto: towers, churches, museums and a wonderful cathedral, the cobbled streets of Ribeira with their colourful houses and lines of laundry, the buzzing bars, restaurants and shops. Hop aboard a boat to explore the Douro valley from the water, a short drive will take you to great surfing beaches and you can learn all about – and taste – delicious port.

Reviews

We had a relaxing stay in this stylish hotel; the room was quiet and comfortable and staff were exceptionally helpful and friendly. The breakfast spread was wonderful - a great start to the day!

Florence, Bristol

Delightful staff encourage you to enjoy the hotel and town. View from the terrace of the hotel’s organic garden, orange trees, poultry scratching around an old tennis court. Also a sweeping view of the River Douro and the port warehouses on the opposite bank. Comfortable as well as being very “designed”.

  • Our Calla Wellness & Spa invites guests and non-guests to this sustainable and relaxing experience, offering body, facial and beauty treatments.
  • Our on-site restaurant "Digby" offers contemporary Portuguese cuisine with a twist. Inspired by the inventor of the wine bottle, Sir Kenelm Digby, it features wine bottles throughout the restaurant.
