The Experience
Allow yourself to be thoroughly looked after by kind staff in this extraordinary setting. The grand staircase rises below the original 1860s domed sky-light with carvings of gods; the splendid library invites you to browse its shelves. Book yourself a massage in the relaxation room, a table in Blind, the restaurant where you eat without knowing the menu, dishes designed by chef Vitor Matos to invigorate the senses.
Bedrooms of all sizes are a treat of bespoke art and design. Each tells a story and honours a different Portuguese author. And each has a writing corner should your muse strike. Take a shower under the stars in glass-roofed bathrooms; the bigger suites have luxurious bathroom ‘cubes’ within the rooms.
Wander around the corner to Batalha Square; visit the National Theatre and Santo Ildefonso Church, the traditional market area and diverse eateries. Return for a cooling plunge and a glass of, port maybe, on the wisteria terrace.

The neighbourhood
From this quiet side street in south central Porto, close to Batalha Square and the Marques de Oliviera garden. It’s 10 minutes’ walk to the colourful, cobbled, riverside Ribeira quarter, with its restaurants, shops and port houses to visit. Most major sites are within 30 minutes’ walk. There are cafés and restaurants on the doorstep; the kindly concierge will advise - try Mistu for modern tapas.

"Wow" is the first word that comes to mind when I walked through the front door of this hotel. It's immediately obvious that a lot of care and attention has gone into renovating this beautiful palace. I particularly love that the interiors pay homage to famous Portuguese authors. The showers in the upstairs rooms are wonderful, as is the library.
