Beautiful and very peaceful. In an unspoilt valley in the Minho hills, where otters thrive in the fast-flowing stream, three carefully restored buildings stand on a small rise practically engulfed by plants and trees – a wonderful garden. Both the granite guest houses have mountain views and terraces and can be taken together by bigger groups. The Cottage has an open-plan living room downstairs – kitchen at one end, wood-burner at the other – and a big open bedroom for four upstairs (there’s also an annexe bedroom). The Mill House is one large studio space; perfect for a couple. Great hosts and caring people: Hans (a homeopathic doctor) and Kate live in the former wine press and run their magical place as sustainably as possible: energy is solar, food is home-grown and mostly organic, the Mill toilet is composting. They also run detox retreats and excellent vegan meals are a possibility. No swimming pool, just dozens of pools in the river to choose from. Get back to nature – turn off mobiles, leave the car and walk the last 300 yards… Memorably special.
