Quinta Tranquila

Odeceixe, Alentejo

A rejuvenating place in two hectares of lush, off-grid land. Disconnect from everyday life, swim in the river, gaze at the stars

Sleeps 4

Listen to the sound of cow bells at dusk; fall asleep to the hoot of the owls. This small, simple, traditional quinta, whose windows face the valley, feels deeply remote yet is ten minutes from Odeceixe.

The house is uncluttered and the furniture upcycled, from the hooks on the wall to the hand-crafted sink. It’s an idyllic spot. Flowers and vegetables grow at the top, the hill rolls down to the river, and the gentle owners live at the back. You can float about from your kitchen to your living space to your terrace, for lunch in the dappled shade. Kids sleep on a sofabed in the living room.

Wind down through the trees to the river – for picnics and wild swims. Stock up or eat out in sleepy, hilltop Odeceixe – or in Rogil, at the Museu do Batata Doce which has a child-friendly garden. Then surf and swim: the beach at Odeceixe is quite special.

What a joy. The natural beauty of Quinta Tranquila: eucalyptus filled valley, a river deep enough to swim in, the majesty and silence of inky nights and the Milky Way, punctuated only by the sound of cowbells; the warmth and welcome of Robin and Cate; the tasteful charm of their ecologically restored quinta. My twin teens and I had a wonderful, restorative week’s holiday here in late July. We did yoga nearby, explored glorious Odeceixe beach, great for surfing and bodyboarding, and swimming in its river. Not crowded, even in high summer. We slept well, cooled by Atlantic breezes. Happy days.

Robin and Cate's place was just perfect. Far from noise and so calm but still quite easy to get to, just a 10 minute drive from gorgeous beaches and beautiful landscapes. Although you don't really need to go anywhere! The view here is beautiful, the river just a step away and the welcoming comfy home could be just fine for a whole month without leaving:) Would come here anytime if i could. Robin and Cate are warm, kind and charming people. Thank you!

Cate and Rob have got a slice of paradise here. If you hunger for nature, beauty and peace and quiet then this is the place for you. The house is lovingly restored with gloriously cool rammed earth walls. It has so many little quirky features each with its own story. It is homely and spotlessly clean. The terrace is perfect for relaxing, eating and looking through Cate's flower beds (full of herbs that we were encouraged to use) across a canopy of trees thronging with birdlife. Down by the river is like the garden of Eden. Fresh water, dappled shade, figs, grapes, butterflies. Go!

Quinta Tranquila was very well equipped and beautifully decorated and presented. The location is quite stunning, with the ability to swim in the river at the bottom of the garden providing a real treat. Our two boys - 5 and 1 - loved the cool shade where they could paddle, swim, or float in Rob and Cate's inflatable ring. It really is a little piece of paradise that gives you a chance to escape everyday stresses. The only sounds we could hear were the cowbells and birdsong. While it feels very remote - in a good way - it's a short drive from Rogil and Odeceixe. We'd love to visit again.

Quinta Tranquila is the ideal place to disconnect from daily life and reconnect with nature. The house has been lovingly restored by Cate and Rob in harmony with the environment. You will leave feeling revitalised, especially after a dip in the river!

I only stopped by for a four night trip to recharge but it ticked all the boxes from me. I hired a car from Faro airport very cheaply and it was only an hour and a half leisurely drive. I took four hours on the way back and meandered along the coast roads and stopped for a traditional portuguese lunch at a little visited beach. It was heaven. Cate and Rob were very hospitable and I enjoyed lounging by the river and outside at night watching the stars. The local beaches are great and everyone around seems to be really friendly. 10/10

The neighbourhood

The Costa Vicentina has a natural, rugged beauty - without the crowds. Your nearest town, Odeceixe, clings to the southern side of the Ribeira de Seixe valley, and is sleepy for most of the year. In summer it gets busy because of the beach (3km outside town). Surf, swim, and enjoy fresh seafood at the Kiosk Agapito. Amoreira Beach, near Aljezur, is equally lovely. Hike the coastal paths and recover with yoga: Aljezur is a 15-minute drive.

Local points of interest from Robin Gilliatt

  • Enjoy 2 beaches in 1 at Praia de Odeceixe, the Atlantic side where you can surf and bodyboard; and the river side , which offers safe paddling for kids. See why this beach is rated one of the “Seven Marvels of Portugal”
  • Explore the Rota Vicentina network. 350+ kms of trails are only 4 kms away... Experience a diversity of landscapes, on Costa Vicentina cliff walks or in the Montados - the mosaic of cork woods and pastures that house a wealth of plant and animal life.
  • Wind your way up the Algarve's only mountain to Caldas de Monchique, a spa town well worth a visit. Known since Roman times, the landscaped gardens with burbling water courses and quirky architecture make it a charming destination for an afternoon out.
  • Further up the mountain the town of Monchique is also well worth visiting. Known for its craft shops, delicious honey and particularly the pedigree of its Medronho (the local firewater).Cool off with hilltop views from its public open air swimming pool!
  • Head into the hills from Quinta Tranquila & stop at the Cabeçoasis bar for an alternative experience to the bars and cafés of the coast. A social hub featuring freshly made food & music. Every Saturday they host friendly jam sessions til the early hours..
  • Just stay here! Many of our guests have found the peace and space at Quinta Tranquila, with the option to swim or relax in the leafy shade ,to be holiday enough!...

Looking for a less hurried lifestyle, British-born Rob and Cate decided on Portugal. Passionate about the place they have worked hard to restore, they love to welcome guests, and enjoy sharing their land and their knowledge. They live on site, with two cats and a friendly dog called Nelly.
