The Experience

Off the beaten track, surrounded by fruit and olive trees, is this good old-fashioned B&B. It’s a very friendly, very relaxing place to stay, and an affordable place from which to explore this pretty part of Portugal. You have quiet beaches 15 minutes away, and walking and cycling along the coast (and in the hills around Monchique). And Silves, with castle and cathedral, has a great choice of restaurants. Well-travelled Bill and Isa met in Angola and are charming hosts; Bill is a mine of information on local places of interest. Their modern home is spotless and traditionally furnished without fuss or frills, while spacious, comfortable bedrooms – wooden furniture, tiled floors, colourful rugs – open to the garden or the lovely big pool; one gets its own terrace. Guests come and go as they please: there are shady spots around the grounds and, for chillier days, a wood-burning stove in the sitting room. There’s also a kitchen corner so you can rustle up a simple meal: excellent for families. The main road is in sight but all you hear is the rustling of the trees. Great for exploring, and brilliant value.

The rooms were spotless, the breakfasts were plentiful, Bill's advice was invaluable, and the evening log fire was most welcome. As fellow Sawday owners, we could see the attention to detail and the willingness to be available. A peaceful location yet close to the lovely old town of Silves, with good restaurants; and also close enough to A22/N125 main roads to explore anywhere you chose to visit in the Algarve. Worth more than the winter price that we paid and would happily return for another visit. Thank you !

We had a wonderfully relaxing stay here over Easter. The location means you can pretty much day trip to anywhere in the Algarve - mountains, surfing beaches, Faro, and it's also a truly restful place to return to after a long day out! We enjoyed some fantastic food and live jazz in Silves too which is only 10 minutes away. Bill knows all the good local places and they looked after us so well - a fantastic place and stonkingly good value!

Just as the Sawday review says. Very clean, very welcoming hosts with suggestions of beaches to visit, restaurants to try and a very handy homemade map to find the local roads. Situated in the countryside ,Silves a 10 minute drive. Local small beaches 15 minutes drive in quiet back roads. A wonderful relaxing break in real Portugal . We will be returning! Thank you Bill and Isa for making us so welcome.

Bill and Isa were friendly, attentive and helpful hosts. Their casa was an oasis of calm in a location that was still busy at the end of September. The room was spacious, very clean and tastefully decorated. The other guests were polite and respectful of the property. This was a great place to unwind at a very reasonable price. We'll be back and we will let friends know about La Casa das Oliveiras too.

Wow. Lovely place - perfectly located for Silves/Lagoa/Feragudo/Portimao etc. It seems everywhere is just 20 mins away. Our hosts were an interesting, warm intelligent couple who freely gave great advice about restaurants, beaches etc. The rooms are spotless, the pool is idyllic. Shhh keep this place secret, it's great.

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Bill & Isa Reed

  • Silves, the old Moorish capital, is a short drive away, or arrive by boat up the river. Climb up cobbled lanes to the imposing castle and cathedral, immerse yourself in the local produce market and enjoy numerous cultural activities all year round.
  • We think our nearest coastline is the best in the Algarve. Walk along the clifftops and enjoy the spectacular scenery – or just lounge on the sandy beaches below. Take a boat trip to view the whole panorama from the sea, and visit a cave or two as well.
  • Dine very well and very reasonably in local eateries: spicy chicken piri-piri, Portuguese tapas, our local speciality the "cataplana"; eat to live music on the castle steps or in a lovely country restaurant, which serves its own delicious house wines…
  • Cultural activities abound all year round … excellent orchestras, jazz and classical, dance, art, festivals of every description, fado. Something for everyone, and we can tell you where to go. And we haven't mentioned the vineyards yet …
  • Much of the Algarve is best experienced out of season, when it's greener and cooler: wild flowers in spring, a beautiful golf course on our doorstep, lots to interest birdwatchers (even at our house), and great walking and cycling all over the Algarve.
  • Everything is just a day trip away. Head west to the wildness of the Atlantic coast with its surfing; go north into the Monchique hills for forests, walks, views and a spa; and to the east, discover Loulé's excellent market, Tavira and the Spanish border.
