The Experience

A beautiful place, serenely run. Martin and Alexandra, a Danish-Portuguese couple, fell in love with an 18th-century ruin and ended up with a paradise. Agapanthus, plumbago and fruit trees mingle with cacti and man-made streams, and the freshwater lake – where you swim with tiny fish – is a magnet for dragonflies and butterflies. There are chlorine pools, too – two of them. You arrive at a big blue iron gate surrounded by whitewashed walls to find storks nesting on top of a telegraph pole and a cluster of cottages around a central farmhouse. All are generously proportioned and well equipped. The décor is Scandinavian-Portuguese, the wood is limewashed in pale cream, and the (very) private patios have herb gardens and fountains. A drop-water system services the gardens and the sunshades are made of bamboo. You can visit Olhão’s Moorish streets and seafood restaurants, or catch the ferry to Isla Deserta. The nearest shops are in Fuzeta, three miles – but when you’ve a shop for basics, a playground for children, free bikes and badminton under the trees, why leave?

We've just spent a lovely relaxing week at Casa Flor de Sal, with our 4 year old daughter. Its set with in a beautiful landscape with sea views and even has it own residents storks. Its a very child friendly place for exploring the wild life. The self catering property was well equipped and very clean. Martina and his wife were attentive hosts and had taken great lengths to maintain COVID-19 guidelines for guests safety. We would definitely love to visit again!

Well, where to start?! Such a beautiful place to stay. We stayed in Stork House, and found it ideal for the three of us. Very clean, light and bright, tastefully decorated - also the most comfortable holiday bed I have ever slept in! Each day fresh bread is delivered to your door, as well as juice, yogurt and cereal etc being provided. We spent our days lounging by the pool or having a dip, playing games in the undercover games area (lovely and cool in the heat), or just enjoying sitting inside or outside the. Don't delay, just book - before someone else does!

Nicky, Portsmouth

We had a wonderful stay at Casa Flor de Sal! This marked our first overseas family holiday with our five-month old baby and Avocet provided a great base. Everything is spotlessly clean and in very good condition. Martin went out of his way to accommodate all our baby needs - cot, high chair, sterliser, toys, and more all provided. We went for the baby package which also included 2-hours babysitting and a fab massage! As an aside we loved the restaurant at nearby Villa Monte Farmhouse for our grown-up date night, whilst our daughter was in the safest of hands with Martin back at the ranch.

What a wonderful place! We were really in need of some quiet, some sun and a bit of luxury yet wanted to have the freedom and flexibility of self-catering, Casa Flore de Sal really delivered everything it promised plus fresh strawberries straight from the garden. Plus the fresh bread delivered to the door every morning and being able to pluck lemons from the tree by the pool when needed. The extra touches made a big difference. The apartment was spacious, well designed and the roof terrace and 'back garden' meant that we could choose sun or shade as we wished. Great intro to the Algarve!

Elizabeth, Edinburgh

A wonderful place that delivers everything it promises. Perfect for children, cleverly designed houses that feel spacious, private and well equipped and great care and attention given by Martin and Alexandra to every detail. An array of glorious beaches are close by, calm lagoons for little people and bracing Atlantic coastline for the more adventurous. We stayed a week and wished it had been two.

Lizzie, London

Immaculate property with lovely views. We stayed in Spoonbill. Amazing views from the roof terrace, and a very secluded rear patio with a herb garden. The pool and the natural swimming pond were superb. Martin is a very professional host and the onsite shop is well stocked with local wines. Daniel mixes a great Mojito - text him from the pool! Local area is wonderful - Fuseta has excellent restaurants right by the fish market, and our favourite beach was Barril.

Dan, Bristol

A wonderful location and the villas were outstanding, all set in well kept and thoughtfully designed gardens. We were welcomed by Martin and a lovely table of pastries and fruit in the villa. They had thoughtfully provided food as per the dietary requirements requested of my wife. The 24 hour shop was most handy and we all thoroughly enjoyed the astronomy evening provided by Martin and his youngest son. The towels and bins were replaced every other other day and the villas cleaned regularly during our 2 week stay. A great location to enjoy this wonderful part of the Algarve. 5 star!

Adam, Falmouth

We stayed in Hoopoe Cottage, which is beautiful and has all the amenities - home from home (but with a sun terrace!). The whole site is well-managed - lovely gardens, good parking and even has its own resident stork family; the natural pool with frogs and dragonflies is a lovely feature. Being close to the saltmarshes and mudflats makes it a great place for anyone interested in wildlife - great walk along the coast for seafood lunch in Fuseta. Our hosts (Martin and Alexandra) were very helpful and made us very welcome.

Sally, Riding Mill

Stunning location in the unspoiled Algarve. The little houses are gorgeous, and kitted out with everything you could need (speakers, bbq, board games). The roof terrace was lovely, and the bed very comfortable. Nothing was too much trouble for Martin and Alexandra. Very highly recommend for a relaxing holiday. The pool was also fantastic! We hope to come back soon.

Chloe, London

Perfect for a relaxing and re-energising holiday. The spacious accommodation is beautifully designed, clean and well-equipped. We particularly enjoyed the sunken bath after a day cycling on the nearby track and the roof terrace with panoramic views across the salt marshes to the sea. Despite being fully occupied, the site was very quiet with a restful atmosphere enhanced by the beautiful gardens and natural pool. And when we didn't feel like cooking there's a little shop with home-cooked ready meals. Martin was very helpful - but they really seem to have thought of everything you might need.

Jeanne, Nottingham

We loved staying at Casa Flor de Sal and would be happy to recommend it to others. It is quite possible to enjoy the area without a car. They provide bicycles and we also used buses, trains and taxis which are cheap. We especially enjoyed the bike ride along the ecovia to Tavira through marshes and fields. Their little shop is well stocked and convenient. Everything very clean and well maintained. The pools are beautiful.

Rupert, Dublin

A calm oasis and a beautiful place to stay. The two properties we had between me and my parents were well furnished, and all the small touches that make you enjoy a holiday had been considered. The kids loved the pool and we all enjoyed exploring the small towns and island beaches that were a short drive away. Even better, this place felt like you were well away from the usual tourist trap of the Algarve! We will certainly be recommending it to our friends back in the UK.

Local points of interest from Martin Sorensen

  • The nearest beaches are in Fuseta 4 km away. One is at the lagoon of the Nature Reserve and perfect for small children as there are no waves. The other is on the sandy islands protecting the lagoon and faces the Atlantic. It is never packed!
  • We are in the Ria Formosa Natural Park where c. 200 bird species can be seen. We have named our cottages after birds seen here: Azure-winged Magpie, Avocet, Flamingo, Hoopoe, Golden Oriole, Spoonbill and Stork. There are 2 Storks' nests in the property.
  • Included in the price is Flamingo, bat and frog spotting, a yoga lesson by the pool, stargazing, relaxing massage, crab races, animal feeding & petting. Activities are run depending on weather and interest.
  • Our natural swimming pool is very good for our skin and also for the animals in the area - the Storks come drink and hunt; we have seen at least 5 species of dragonflies and damselflies as well as chameleons.
  • The fishmarket in Olhão (5km) has the reputation of being the best in Portugal. It is worth a visit, even if you do not plan buying anything, and the vegetable market next to it is also excellent.
  • We are located in the heart of unspoiled Eastern Algarve: Olhão, Fuseta and Moncarapacho are all located within a 5 km radius of Casa Flor de Sal. Tavira and Faro are 20 min. away.
