The Experience

Linger over breakfast in the luxuriant terraced garden overlooked by medieval ramparts. And then why not simply linger some more, it’s so peaceful here, before strolling into town to visit the castle and restored fort, and for lunch – Andrew and Rupert will gladly advise.
Or head off for a day’s exploring the surrounding nature reserve. Take walking boots and binoculars: the bird-life’s a treat; so are the local beaches and a boat trip on the Guadiana river.

And do visit the fine little Algarve city of Tavira, with its medieval castle, excellent restaurants, long sandy beach and salt marshes where spoonbills and flamingos feed.

Importantly too, do talk to Rupert about dinners, – his tapas and tasting menus are a delight; his fresh, modern take on Portuguese and Spanish dishes memorable. And so to bed… in light, luxurious bedrooms. Bliss.

Another sublime stay at Casa Rosada and the second time that I have taken friends. Our hosts are as immaculate and delightful as ever and the house never fails to be the oasis of tranquility and peace that we were craving. Wonderful to know of a place and people that are always welcoming, witty and oh Rupert, that cheesecake! Thank you both.

Casa Rosada is the only place that we have EVER visited twice on holiday as we like to try new places...however we made an exception this summer and decided to go back to Casa Rosada to visit Andrew and Rupert...and boy are we glad that we did! Our second stay was even more memorable than our first. The house is elegant and beautifully decorated, the garden is a haven of tranquility and the food that comes out of Rupert's kitchen is simply fabulous! It's fair to say that a third visit is very likely! Andrew and Rupert are wonderful, generous hosts who make staying at Casa Rosada so special.

Our introduction to Portugal couldn't have been better. Arriving early on the morning of the last day of the annual Medieval Festival we were met by Andrew and Rupert at the door of their beautiful home. Casa Rosada is an elegant, beautifully furnished property with a lovely garden of secluded places to sit nestled at the foot of an ancient fort. A fantastic place to enjoy the deliciously exotic breakfasts. Andrew and Rupert are perfect hosts with great recommendations for places to visit and made us feel very welcome. We hope to return to sample Rupert's renowned cuisine.

Casa Rosada is 100% deserving of its inclusion in Alistair Sawdays 'Special Places to Stay". It really is "special" with spacious elegant bedrooms that are spotlessly clean. Every comfort is provided for and the fine bed linen and luxurious towels will be much appreciated by discerning guests. Andrew and Rupert make every effort to ensure a relaxing and enjoyable stay. The breakfasts are delightful, especially when taken outside in the sheltered courtyard. Fine linen napkins and table coverings add to ambiance while enjoying fresh juice from the garden oranges, home made yoghurt and jams.

So fabulous is this place I went twice last year. The welcoming charm of hosts, Rupert & Andrew, the comfort and unique style of each of the beautifully appointed rooms and the peaceful haven of a garden so caringly tended by Andrew just draw you back. I can't think of anywhere as relaxing and chilled as Casa Rosada. And a bonus — Rupert, arguably the best cook in the region, serves luscious breakfast in the sun-kissed garden surrounded by sweet scented lavender and oleander. Dinner on request served in garden by glow of candlelight - you can't wish for a better treat. Can't wait to return!!!

The old saying - never go back to spoil a memory - is comprehensively kicked into touch on a return visit to Casa Rosada. What's not to like about hosts with an attention to detail in making their guests visits truely memorable, superb breakfasts & fabulous evening meals ? Congratulations Andrew & Rupert !

Location

The neighbourhood

The lively old town of Castro Marim, 4k from Spain, has an August medieval festival, and shops, cafés and restaurants (try Tasca Medieval) within an easy walk of Casa Rosada. Hire bikes for a spin on the cycle track to Vila Real; take a trip on the river Guadiana. There are golf courses, great beaches (Praia Verde, Fabrica, Cacela Velha) and salt pans nearby – and it’s only 20 minutes to the fine historic town of Tavira

Local points of interest from Andrew Roberts

  • Alojamento Local Registration number: 11682/AL.
  • Every year at the end of August Castro Marim hosts a 5 day medieval festival.Dias Medievais is a celebration of our medieval past, with music, food, street performance, markets and fireworks.Watch the opening procession from the balcony at Casa Rosada.
  • Situated in a nature reserve - great for walking and bird watching. For the foodies this is also the location for the production of artisan Flor de Sal.
  • Situated between the coast and the hills - ideal for exploring the beautiful countryside or the spectacular beaches. The scenic drive along the Guadiana river is a must.
  • On the border with Spain so Andalucia is on your doorstep as well as the east Algarve. Its even possible to do a day trip to Seville
  • Great restaurants both locally and in the historic town of Tavira a short drive away -everything from traditional to fine dining. And we are very handy for tapas in Spain! Best of both worlds
