The Experience
At the end of the winding track you arrive to trilling birds, masses of greenery, and hazelnuts roasting in the sun. Warm welcoming Paula and Jella, passionate about nature, do all they can to give back to the earth, and offer you juice from their oranges.
In the farmhouse are three bedrooms, simple but delightful, plus four suites with kitchenettes; and more in the forest up the hill. There’s a playground for children, and gentle dogs to make friends with. Swim with the ducks, bask in the hammocks, snooze on the farmhouse verandas.
The day starts with a buffet breakfast in a colourful casita. For dinner, pop into Aljezur. There’s the friendly ‘Pont a Pé’ for fresh seafood, and lively ‘Mo’ for vegan/vegetarian. Return to a mini cinema under the stars… climb the forest trail and catch the setting sun.

What a beautiful and serene place Muxima is. From the minute we stepped out of the car, we wished we could stay longer. Paula is so friendly and you'll be welcomed with fresh orange juice and toasted hazelnuts on arrival. This is the perfect place to get back to nature - swim in the natural pool, follow the forest trails, relax in the meadow and join the yoga classes.

Location
The neighbourhood
You can birdwatch on the farm, do yoga, or follow the forest trails. This remote area of the Alentejo is pretty wild, and has many stunning beaches. The nearest is Amoreira at the mouth of the river, with shallows for children and gentle waves to ride. For bigger waves, Monte Clerigo is equally close. The small town of Alijezur is 3km, with shops, a market and several cafes, restaurants and bars.
Local points of interest from Paula
- Hundreds of frogs, butterflies, dragonflies, gekko's, bee's, a donkey, two dogs and so, so many animals and insects to find..
- Yoga classes by the pool guided by the singing of the frogs
- Ayurvedic massages on request
- Saturday market with beautiful homemade and homegrown products.
- Horse riding, surfing and floating down the river of Amoreira beach
- Great selection of restaurants, traditional Portugese food or vegan places. Centre of Aljezur walking distance

Introducing
Paula
Paula, her husband and young children had been visiting Muxima for years. When they learnt in 2018 it was on the market, they snapped up the chance to own it, and re-located from the Netherlands. They have re-opened with the help of the previous owners. They love nature and the simple pleasures of life, as well as surfing, skateboarding and interior design.
This was a truly wonderful find. For our family, Muxima was perfect, and a very welcome change from synthetic, bland hotels. We loved the rooms, the fantastic breakfasts, the ambience and the unobtrusive assistance of the very committed hosts, Paula and Jelle. All of their recommendations were absolutely spot on and they really took the time to pass on their local knowledge. Our small children were really welcomed and loved the menagerie of dogs, chickens and donkey, and the freshwater pool (with frogs) was a complete hit. We will be back.
