The
Experience

A beautifully restored 150-year-old ‘cubist’ townhouse in the old quarter of Olhão with its cobbled back streets, tree-lined promenade and famous markets – one for fruit, vegetables and meat and the other with a vast array of freshly-caught fish. The townhouse hallway is flooded with light: the ceiling is vaulted, doors are high, the original floor tiles are stunning and all is white and inviting. Find a comfortable sitting room with two sofas and a dining area, a kitchen that has all a cook desires and two spotless bedrooms – the one at the front is larger – both with underfloor heating, handmade furniture and top notch bathrooms. You have your own whitewashed courtyard with pretty bougainvillea and outdoor seating – a narrow tiled stair takes you to a large roof terrace with pergola, dining for six, BBQ, oven, shower and sunbeds. A great spot for a drink then dinner (fish, of course!) with views across the town rooftops. Stroll to restaurants, take a water taxi to the almost deserted sand-spit islands of Armona, Culatra, Farol and Deserta: no roads… just fishing nets, camomile dunes, a sprinkling of cafés.

Reviews

My wife and I have just returned from a lovely week in Sarah's house. Relaxing up on the roof terrace was a real highlight of our stay. The house is a delight, with many stylish features and was a charming base to explore Olhao. We visited Tavira, the Ria Formosa nature park and we also caught the ferry to one of the offshore islands for an afternoon on the beach (miles of pure sand). Communicating with Sarah was very easy and Ana, her house manager in Olhao, is really helpful.

We spent a very happy C'mas here - it is really comfortable. Underfloor heating, extremely comfy beds, good showers, perfect little kitchen- very well equipped - even some herbs and spices! roof terrace ideal for a sunny Christmas lunch, & watching New Year fireworks. Very close to the places you want to get to - too close to good pastelarias, our waistlines have expanded. My husband is often in a wheelchair, and apart from the cobbles on some streets, it worked really well for him. Excellent cleaners & charming Ana who welcomed us, and when we locked our selves out came running! Thank you!

Olhao is a lovely town, unspoilt by tourism! A maze of old streets leading down to the harbour front where you will find great fish restaurants and a market. Sarah's Townhouse was extra special - renovated sympathetically in keeping with the style of house with beautiful tiled floors. Spotlessly clean, comfortable beds, great showers, everything you needed was provided - well equipped kitchen, little extras like beach towels. Lots of information, and a meet and greet service. The roof top garden is lovely with sun loungers, a bbq and a shower. Communication and payment was easy. Perfect!

We had an absolutely wonderful time at the Olhao Townhouse. It was sparkling clean, and really well equipped, with lots of thoughtful extra touches, such as beach equipment. And the roof terrace was really special, spacious with both shady corners and sunny spots and gorgeous views! All in all, one of the nicest placed we have stayed, and the town of Olhao is definitely one to return to.

We had a lovely stay in Olhao.. This townhouse was even better than the pictures on your web site promised. It is tastefully and beautifully presented, with lofty ceilings and amazing tiled floors. The bathrooms and bedrooms deserve five stars and a fully equipped kitchen into the bargain . We loved eating out on the roof terrace overlooking the rooftops and sipping a glass of wine even this early in the season. The interesting seafront, cafes and daily fish and vegetable market ( a gourmands delight ) are just a walk away. We ran out of time for a boat trip but we will definitely be back

Local points of interest from Sarah Black

  • Faro airport is 20 minutes by car or taxi, there is also a train and bus service from Faro. A car is not essential but parking is available at front and back of house. The house manager will meet you on arrival and assist you with any enquiries.
  • Olhao is the busiest fishing port on the Algarve, an authentic Portuguese town a world away from the tourist traps lining the western Algarve. It's old town centre has a cobbled pedestrian area with winding back streets leading to the promenade and port.
  • The promenade is a few minutes walk from the house where you will find excellent coffee shops, bars and some wonderful fish restaurants. A lively area to sit, have a glass of wine, watch the fishing boats come and go and enjoy the bustle of the port.
  • The promenade is also where you will find the towns famous fish and vegetable markets. On Saturdays there is a lively outdoor market selling local produce, birds, plants and animals. There are also weekend antique markets in nearby towns.
  • At the port you will find a regular service of ferries and water taxis which will transport you to one of Europes best kept secrets, the traffic free islands of Armona, Culatra, Farol and Deserta with it's famous fish restaurant O'Estamine.
  • If you have a car you can explore along the costal road, visiting the fishing village of Fuseta, further along the road is an exit to Pedras del Rei, here you can park your car on the lagoon, cross a floating bridge and catch a small train to the beach.
