The Experience

Take a trip into Loulé for the Saturday market (best to get there early) and you can take your pick of the freshest fish and seafood plus fabulous salad ingredients, cheeses, charcuterie, local honey, artisan gins and excellent Portuguese wine – try the slightly fizzy Vinho Verde which is refreshing in the heat and quite light. The kitchen has all you need for holiday cooking and you’re left all the basics plus a generous hamper in case you haven’t shopped on your first day, which includes a case of beer and two bottles of wine.

Children can go completely free range, dashing around the garden, splashing in the good-sized pool or playing badminton on a sandy pitch. Adults seeking quiet can find a calm spot in the house with a book and a comfy chair, all can relax in this unpretentious place with its lemon and lime trees and colourful pots.

Unspoiled sandy beaches are around a 20-minute drive.

Reviews

We have just stayed at the Farmhouse and were absolutely thrilled with it's "new" look. Although, with the restorations, the owner has retained most of it's original features, the furniture and fittings are all super comfortable and contemporary. The outside space is exceptional with breathtaking views across the unspoiled Algarve countryside. We didn't want to leave........do try the local restaurant (Rui's) which is just a quick walk away....I can highly recommend!

Tamar, Newark

The Farmhouse was perfect for our family holiday. Tones of space in this lovely Portuguese farmhouse with beautiful surroundings. Highly recommended.

Edward, Ottawa

Excellent property. Exactly as advertised. Clean, well presented. Good location for both hills and beaches.

Phillip, Newcastle

Plenty of space here indoors and out for children to charge about and adults to relax. You're near to wonderful beaches, good seafood restaurants, a fabulous Saturday market in Loulé and some wonderful walks in natural parks or on a guided cork tour.

Nicola, Sawday's Inspector

Relaxing holiday home with a beautiful swimming pool and sprawling hillside views. We had a great time with some fantastic people, food, and we were able to really settle into a slower pace of life. Wonderful memories of this place!

Location

The neighbourhood

The nearest town, São Brás de Alportel is a ten-minute drive for cafes, small shops and a museum from which you can join a guided cork tour. The palace at Estoi has gorgeous gardens and the Serra do Caldeirão is nearby for excellent hiking and biking. Visit Almancil for the best custard tarts at the Venepão and a beautiful baroque church or head to Tavira (30 minutes) for traditional Fado.

Local points of interest from Kate Ferguson

  • Ze Deas at the bottom of the hill (on the main road) is the best local restaurant. Go at lunch and have the excellent mixed fish bbq and / or black pork (porco preto). Very cheap (but superb). A real ‘locals’ spot.
  • Sao Bras De Alportel (10 min) is a quiet country town. Lots of cafes here (best is Cafe Ervilha in the square) and the closest supermarket is here (Pingo Doce). Excellent inexpensive local restaurant 'Luis dos Frangos' (traditional churrasqueira / BBQ).
  • Palace at Estoi (17 min) (Pousada do Palacio de Estoi) - a stunning pink rococo-style palace set in formal Versailles-esque gardens (public bar & ornate rooms for sunset drinks). Alte & Salir are pretty, whitewashed villages with flower filled streets.
  • Serra do Caldeirao - a protected inland area of undulating hills, cork trees and harsh scrubland; excellent hiking / hill walking (479m Rocha da Pena) and wildlife. Via Algarviana passes through (famous cross-country hiking route).
  • Loule (16 min) - large inland town w/ excellent Saturday market. Attractive old quarter and Moorish castle ruins. Excellent Brazilian style restaurant (Oliveiras) with ‘swords’ (skewers) of steaks (Maminha / rump tail). Big supermarket is a Continente.
  • Almancil (18 min) en route to the beaches - stop for the best custard tarts at the Venepau (pasteleira) and visit the stunning, traditional baroque church, ‘Igreja de Sao Lourenco de Matos’. The swishest restaurant is here, Casa do Campo. Book ahead!
