The Experience

This luxurious former farmhouse has indescribably impressive views and is run by two welcoming Scots. She’s a chef and he’s a golf pro – expect insider tips on the local green scene. It stands high on a San Miguel hillside as the eastern Algarve sprawls below, as does a bougainvillea-doused garden with romantic corners, low stone walls and a zen-like calm. Beyond distant motorway hum are the famed Ria Formosa wetlands – a twitcher’s hot-spot – and a smattering of idyllic island beaches. The pool on its terrace is generous, the rattan furniture sun-warmed and breakfast appears on a coolly tiled table. It’s peace personified. Nab the tasteful Terrace double for its huge mirrored wall and private roof terrace, or the front rooms with their gauzy sea views – idyllic. Bathrooms are small, snazzy and well-lit, in the beachy lounge is a well-stocked honesty bar… outside, friendly dogs and Winnie the cat playfully lurk. The visitors’ book talks of breakfast muffins to die for and of the line-caught fish that appear for dinners on request. Look out for messages on mini blackboards as you chalk up a few days. Wonderful.

Our first three nights in Portugal were spent at Winniehill. The home and grounds are beautiful. Robin and Fiona are friendly, welcoming hosts. They had many suggestions for things to do in the area. Breakfast is a feast for the eyes and the tummy. Our final night in Portugal was also spent at Winniehill. Arriving back felt like we were "home". We highly recommend a stay here.

A lovely home with a good view of the Ria Formosa. Extremely kind and friendly hosts (Trip Advisor Excellence awards not a surprise). Comfortable rooms and good bathrooms. Breakfast is a luxurious experience and worth taking time over, as Fiona generates a lip-smacking array of good things, with a hot dish (that changes daily) plus fresh fruit, home-made bread, muffins and other delicacies. A commitment to comfort, good local knowledge and restaurant recommendations, plus a desire to make your stay pleasant defines Robin and Fiona's approach. Will return.

We had a lovely stay- combination of relaxing and exploring. Robin and Fiona are delightful and the breakfasts lived up to their reputation! We have plenty to go back for and hope not to leave it too long..

The setting, the poolside breakfast spread and the wonderful welcome we had were all fabulous. Our flight from Bristol was delayed and we didn't arrive until nearly midnight, but Fiona quickly rustled up platters of cold meat, cheeses and fruit to fill the hungry gap Ryan Air had left! The following day - after a breakfast that included freshly baked bread, still warm muffins and Eggs Benedict, she helped us plan our day and booked us into a superb restaurant for the evening. We were sad to continue our onward journey - to an expensive Parador that didn't compare with Winniehill!

Perfect. Nice location - good facilities. Fiona and Robin excellent hosts.Nothing too much trouble. Very welcoming-full of information and guidance. No surprise they have a lot of repeat customers. We will also be back! As some other review said just go there you will not regret it!

What a wonderful find! Fiona & Robin run the B&B just like a home from home, and it works. Fiona's cooking is top notch, and the place runs like clockwork - a well oiled machine. We had a superb week, and there is no doubt we will be back soon.

My daughter and I had the most wonderful stay here, everything we had hoped for and more. Fiona prepared beautiful breakfasts each morning and cooked superb dinners, the best prawns I have ever tasted. Robin and Fiona could not be more helpful, friendly and welcoming. They recommend restaurants to eat at, beaches to visit, boat trips and more. A superb holiday and we are booking for next summer and for a longer stay next time

Winniehill is a wonderful spot, we're really glad we found Fiona and Robin. They're such warm, welcoming and friendly hosts. Breakfasts were a plentiful spread including Fiona's wonderful homemade bread and muffins. Great location for sightseeing in the Algarve. Very relaxing and we made some good friends. We'll definitely return again, a perfect retreat. Highly recommended.

We absolutely loved every aspect of our stay at Winnie Hill. A perfect retreat with wonderful views, brilliant hosts, a fantastic terraced swimming pool topped off by amazing food. Fiona and Robin made us so welcome and comfortable and were so helpful in advising us where to visit and where to eat in the evenings. Winnie Hill is the perfect location to enjoy the Eastern Algarve and we are definitely coming back again. Lets hope you don't become too popular!

Once again we found this gem using Alistair Sawday. It is close to Faro - about 25 mins by car and has commanding views over the coast and hills nearby. The place is a delight, with 3 rooms and an excellent pool. We stayed in two, the rear with roof terrace and the ground floor fronting the pool and both were superb. The breakfasts are exquisite and different each day, prepared by Fiona and served by Robin, with Abigail the spaniel, Rupert the Lab and sometimes even Winnie, the cat in tow. The evening meals are excellent and when served outside with fellow travellers add to the indulgence.

A little piece of Heaven in the Eastern Algarve. Exceptional Property.....Lovely airy rooms, beautiful poolside area and gardens. Exceptional Hosts...Robin is a wealth of local knowledge, best restaurants, beaches and places of interest.A really nice couple who have the balance between hosts and guests just right. EXCEPTIONAL FOOD.....Best breakfast spread we have ever had in a B &B or Five Star Hotel for that matter!Fiona's food was just delicious.Homemade jams, freshly made pancakes a different egg dish each day...oh and muffins to die for!! Honestly can't recommend highly enough.

As soon as we arrived we fell in love. The gardens are beautiful, the uninterrupted views are breath taking. Gorgeous romantic rooms. The pool area with it's comfy sunbeds, shaded wicker furniture and simply just the sound of nature is so relaxing. Robin and Fiona are amazing , taking complete pride in their beautiful villa. Winniehill is clean, looked after and the breakfast and evening meals ( should you choose to have - we would definitely recommend) are first class. We have been to lots of lovely hotels, but the charm, friendliness and atmosphere has made WinnieHill a firm favorite .

This is a truly beautiful place. Our room by the pool was simply stunning with a trendy shower room to compliment. Fiona is a true professional with an eye to detail. The honesty bar was such a treat and relaxing .The views of Algarve are spectacular. We had beautiful candlelit meals cooked just for us ,watching the sun go down. The expert local knowledge and directions to beaches and local real Potugese restaurants was very special and helpful to us. We loved this place with a passion.

apart from the wonderful break at winniehill, there are beautiful beaches one accessed by a little train , . the saturday morning friut and veg markets in olhoa, the market in the lovely little town of estoi and finally the chicken shack and another little restaurant which served the most amazing beef and chicken all sourced by our hosts, nothing was too much again for next year.
