Hugging the shore of one of the Alentejo’s largest freshwater lakes, the Quinta is a paradise of wild beauty. The area has a microclimate so the swimming season is long, and spring’s wild flowers will enchant you. Frank’s eco-friendly renovation of the original low house took years and then a row of guest rooms was added. These are light, cool and pleasingly simple, with terraces and gorgeous lake views. The big extended living room and bar share one sociable space and embrace Portuguese and English styles of décor; now, thanks to the arrival of new wife Daniella and her family, there’s a wonderfully warm happy feel. Beyond huge windows is a vine-festooned terrace for sultry summer days; further butterfly-bright terraces brim over with hibiscus, oleander, palm, jasmine, plumbago, cactus. Follow the path to the jetty where you can canoe, fish for crayfish, sail, sunbathe on the lawns, stroll around the lake, perhaps in the company of Frank’s dogs. Delightful Frank will help with the naming of all those birds; the whole remote place is a birdwatcher’s dream.
