Across a country road from lovely Widbrook Grange, this two-storey boathouse has a jaunty, nautical air. The bright and breezy modern layout caters for locals and visitors alike, and you'll often find boating folk from the marina supping a pint at the bar. At the front: step up to a neat space where you can sit by the sleek faux fire, drinking coffee and enjoying homemade biscuits. Or settle on a deep sofa in the lounge before strolling through to the long dining room which looks out over the water. Swans and ducks sail by as you tuck into hearty plates of pub classics (pie of the day, fish of the day). There's always something to catch your eye out on the marina - smoke curling from a houseboat chimney, narrow boats setting out for London or Bath - and the staff are friendly and efficient. Little ones will love the pirate play area outside.

"If you've always hankered after a life on the water, messing about on boats or even just watching them from safe inside a warm and welcoming pub, the Boat House is for you. Its light and bright inside, with space to sit with coffee and homemade biscuits, as well as lots of dining tables with watery views across the marina. The menus are full of pub classics and portions are generous and fresh. On a rainy day, we watched the smoke rising from the chimneys of the nearest houseboat and felt very snug and content."
