The Old Coastguard stands on the water in one of Cornwall's loveliest coastal villages. It's a super spot and rather peaceful – very little has happened here since the Spanish sacked the place in 1595. It’s owned by Edmund and Charles Inkin, brothers who are past masters at running lovely small hotels; warm colours, attractive prices, great food and kind staff are their hallmarks. Downstairs, the airy bar and the dining room come together as one, the open plan informality creating a great space to hang out. You get smart rustic tables, earthy colours, local ales and local art, then wooden floors and a crackling fire. Drop down a few steps to find a bank of sofas and a wall of glass framing sea views; in summer, doors open onto a decked terrace, a lush lawn, then the coastal path weaving down to the small harbour. Bedrooms hit the spot: warm colours, excellent beds, robes in fine bathrooms, books everywhere. Most have the view, eight have balconies. Don't miss dinner: salt and pepper monkfish, fish stew with mussels, chocolate mousse with tonka bean ice cream. Dogs are very welcome.
