A cool little inn lost in beautiful hills, child- and dog-friendly, with happy staff and award-winning food

Read guest comments

A lovely little inn in the middle of a pretty village, surrounded by wonderful walking country. It's all things to all men - a smart restaurant, a lively bar - and very dog-friendly. A stream runs through the big garden, where you can eat in good weather; free-range hens live in one corner. Inside, country interiors fit the mood perfectly. You get fresh flowers, tartan carpets, games and books galore. There's a bar for local ales, a sitting-room bar with an open fire, but the hub of the hotel is the bar in the middle, where village life gathers. You can eat wherever you want – there's an airy restaurant, too – so dig into delicious country fare, with meat from the hills around you: perhaps venison tartare, followed by sea bream or roast local pheasant and a sharp lemon posset to finish.

  • There is a lovely little village shop attached to the hotel. We sell everything from everyday necessities to little gifts, maps and newspapers.
  • Did you know you can play Golf or Tennis in the village. Just a few minutes on foot and we can provide you with clubs and rackets
  • Fancy a ride in a vintage bus? Check out Cumbria Classic Coaches. They do a run through beautiful countryside twice a week to Hawes or Barnard Castle
  • The Howgill Fells are the ideal place for short walks or longer hikes. Ask for details, we also have a great brochure and map in our shop

"Delightful decor, superb service and fabulous food. So many beautiful touches, such as the swan biscuits on the refreshment tray, organic bathroom toiletries or the attentiveness of the staff. We intend to make an annual visit to this very special B&B."

"The Black Swan is well established won many awards, and obviously has loyal guests who stay and dine there. We enjoyed this friendly comfortable country inn in a beautiful tranquil village well situated to tour this scenic area. We chose a room at the rear of the hotel which offers perhaps more privacy and peace. Well organised for those travelling with pets, it has an excellent kitchen, lovely pub, outdoor area for drinks and we met delightful fellow guests. Only quibble, ordered the menu specials on Fathers Day evening, obviously what had been served at lunch so not great. Would return here."

"This small hotel & pub is run by people who know what they are doing and care! Its welcoming, warm, helpful and relaxing. It offers good value.. Its good to see the owners and the team wanting to make sure visitors are comfortable and enjoying their stay. This is not a boutique hotel, thank goodness. The food tastes as it should. The rooms are comfortable, the pub has plenty of locals who visit and eat there. Easy to get too, well placed for lots of interesting places, walks or daily trips. I'm so pleased I've found the Black Swan. I will return. My thanks to everyone there. "

"This is a lovely hotel - the kind of place where you relax just walking through the door and feel like you're amongst friends when you've known people all of ten minutes. Our rooms (we had three, all overlooking the garden) were spacious, light and beautifully furnished. Beds were enormous and super-comfortable, and everything was spotlessly clean. The menu was interesting and food was beautifully cooked and plenty of it. Service was friendly and attentive but not intrusive. The perfect Cumbrian welcome - I can't wait to go back!"
