A rustic-smart décor now makes this pub shine, but lots of lovely old stuff remains. Bedrooms are top notch; food delights in fresh produce

The New Inn is most certainly new; it may date to the 16th century, but they have recently spent the best part of a year refurbishing the place and now it shines. Gone are the swirly green carpets; local slate has been laid in the bar. Lots of lovely old stuff remains – timber frames, mullioned windows, the odd settle – but the feel is fresh with warm colours, engineered oak floors and a smart new bar where you can order a pint of Dorset Gold or a glass of good wine. An open-plan feel runs throughout and you dig into local food wherever you want, perhaps fish from Brixham, local game, sticky toffee pudding. Bedrooms – some in the main house, others in the old stables – are good value for money. You'll find Hypnos mattresses, blond wood furniture and super little bathrooms. Those in the converted stables feel more contemporary: ground-floor rooms open onto the terrace, where you eat in good weather; those above are built into the eaves. The suites come with double-ended baths in the room. Don't miss the Giant.

"We stayed for 4 nights in this fabulous small country hotel, great bedroom and the bar, restaurant & food were excellent as was Jeremy & his whole team. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and if we are ever anywhere near this part of the UK will definitely stay again. We also loved the village which was very close to Dorchester & the Hardy sights. "
