Worth a detour to this highly sociable place full of happy locals. Find a roaring fire, live music on Fridays and exceptional fresh seafood every day

Yards from the sea at Harwich is a simple but great pub. Real ales, happy faces, sea shanties (Fridays), farmers, fishermen, families, dogs… and logs in the burner, a porthole in the bar, and crisply battered haddock fresh from the sea. Since 1850 the Alma has been a welcoming port of call. Now the planked floors and standing timbers are joined by upcycled curiosities and nautical oddities - quirky is the word. The blackboards are ever-changing so for lovers of fresh fish (skate wing, mussels, oysters, lobster, dressed crab, crab linguine, Dover sole) it’s ace, and the tartare sauce is lovely too. They do good burgers - spiced for veggies, hand-pressed for carnivores - and a range of great puddings including a secret recipe chocolate brownie. Clean plates all round!

Local points of interest from
Nick May:

  • Explore The Redoubt Fort, a huge massive (anti) Napoleonic fort used by the military until the 1950's. Check out the pro Hitler graffiti in the prison cells and the very spooky non-realistic waxworks that you remember from your childhood.
  • If you plan on catching the morning or evening ferry to the Netherlands, we offer late dinners and early breakfasts, by far the finest way to start your grand tour of the low countries.
  • You should of course eat at the Alma but for something completely different check out Thai up at the Quay where Andy and Pom cook the finest Thai food in the East. Tom yum soup and Grilled sea bream are my personal favourites.
  • Catch the Foot ferry to Shotley and walk the couple of miles to Pin Mill where at the Butt and Oyster serves a fine pint in one of the most bucolically beautiful spots in the land of the Eastern Angles.
  • North Essex is great cycling country - bring your bike and we can send you on small medium or large tours of the Tendring Hundred.
  • Fancy a beach Hut? We have a basic model that can be hired, great for crabbing and chilling both literally and metaphorically in the winter.
