Head for the south coast, to the lovely Georgian market town of Lymington. A nautical delight! Tasty food with sea views

An imposing grey and blue building - a mix of brick and wattle and daub - opposite a row of pretty cottages, overlooking the Lymington slipway, in a residential area half a mile from the town centre. There’s no forgetting you’re in a renowned sailing resort, from the plush rooms (and smart bathrooms) named after ships to the associated paraphernalia: charts, pictures of boats, seashells, not forgetting the clientele – a mix of locals and well-heeled boat owners from the nearby marina. They come for the food and friendly welcome from the young staff. The menu is traditional (think scallops, pork belly, or aubergine and feta with couscous), the wine list wide-ranging with a good selection by the glass, and the décor new and shiny. Comfy armchairs, lead windows, parquet flooring, a wood burner and four separate eating areas help to keep it cosy and welcoming. Dynamic landlord Gary is working hard to make his mark, offering good value for the area and running events with the local community. There’s a large garden to sit in, the whole of Hampshire and the New Forest to explore, and, of course, a spot of sailing, too.
