Sofas in front of the fire, English wines and local ales, ambrosial food and chic rooms, all a short stroll from Sissinghurst Castle

A charming village pub surrounded by apple orchards and bluebell woods, the Milk House is stylish, welcoming and nicely priced. The Sunday lunch is fabulous with seasonal produce mostly sourced within 20 miles. In winter, cosy up in front of the fire, in summer, decant onto a big terrace with an outside bar and wood-fired pizza oven, not a bad spot for a jug of Pimm's and a crispy margherita. There’s a duck pond, lawns for a pint in the sun, then views over open country. Airy interiors have an easy style: woven willow lampshades hanging above the bar, a timber-framed dining room, where you dig into fabulous food, perhaps home-cured smoked salmon, free-range Park Farm beef, chocolate tart with kirsch-soaked cherries; there are matchless local cheeses, too. The lovely gardens at Sissinghurst Castle are close.
