Legendary inn by the river with open fires, art, rich fabrics, barbours and dogs. Warm crab cakes in the bar, brilliant food by candlelight

The old deerkeeper's lodge sits just above the river Hodder with views across parkland to rising fells. Merchants used to stop by and fill up with wine, food and song before heading north through notorious bandit country. Now barbours and muddy dogs mix with frocks and suits. You can eat in the bar but the long restaurant and the outside terrace drink in the view – which will only increase your enjoyment of Bowland lamb with cassoulet of beans and root vegetables, homemade ice cream and fine wines (including their own well-priced Vintner's). In the bar, antiques, bric-a-brac, peat fires, old copies of The Beano, fish and chips, warm crab cakes and local bangers. At weekends it gets packed and if you want a table, the more formal restaurant takes bookings. You'll love it.

Guest feedback
"I had heard about the Inn at Whitewell years ago, and always wanted to visit it. We came to celebrate our 35th Wedding Anniversary for a weekend here - it was fabulous! The room was in an annexe, "the Coach House", and it was superb - large, with a very comfortable bed, an extra kitchen and a separate en suite bathroom, with a magnificent Victorian bath and shower and a "his and hers" pair of basins. We eat in the bar in the Friday night and in the dining room on the Saturady night. The food was excellent - the Lonk lamb is to die for, and the Blond Witch ale is very moreish. The Trough of Bowland is one of England's best kept secrets, and it is glorious - we would love to have explored more. We cannot wait to go back, but perhaps will not do so, as we do not want to spoil our memories of a perfect stay!"
