Weekend brunches are the stuff of legend. Tuck into sage and sweetcorn fritters, streaky bacon, avocado and heirloom tomatoes...

This pretty Georgian 'public house and dining room' sits in a landmark location near Sloane Street, the perfect spot for people watching. Inside: mellow walls, oval sash windows, soft jazz and a big buzz – very SW1. Take your time; this isn't somewhere to pop into; punters are here for serious drinks and canapés in the private room upstairs, or for the food which is pricey but praiseworthy, upmarket pub grub. The breakfasts and weekend brunches (served until 4pm) caught our eye – how about sage and sweetcorn fritters, streaky bacon, avocado and heirloom tomatoes, or an open fillet steak sandwich with spinach, fried egg and béarnaise sauce. If you stay for lunch, you can indulge in Carlingford rock oysters, or settle in for one of their famous Sunday roasts which draw crowds of regulars. The bar is dog-friendly, and Knightsbridge beckons.

  • Residents of Motcomb Street affectionately refer to it as “the village”,and – with its cobblestones, pretty little courtyards, charming, low-levelGeorgian architecture and intimate clutch of shop. It's well worth a wander
  • The building dates from 1830 and was designed in the ‘Greek Revival’ style with Doric columns facing the street. It has a Grade II Historic England listing.
  • The Alfred Tennyson, so named after the poet Alfred Tennyson Born on August 6th, 1809, he became one of the country’s most well-loved and respected Victorian poets, a true national treasure. One of his most famous poems was the Charge of the Light Brigade.
