A lively crowd from shoppers to tourists to locals are lured by the country-house feel and tasty British menu in the capital’s heart

Where goats once grazed, smart boutiques flourish, but you barely know you're in the heart of town. Step inside, to a stylish serene space of light oak tables, sage green walls and beige textiles – more country cool than urban glitz. Graze on eggs Benedict at breakfast; at lunch, or dinner, move onto house cocktails and well-chosen wines. Dishes might include line-caught cod fillet with crushed baby potatoes, sautéed spinach and a pickled beetroot dressing, or 28-day dried Castle of Mey fillet steak from the grill. What's good about this intimate pub (little sister to the more characterful Thomas Cubitt and The Orange) is that it attracts a varied crowd, from chaps in suits to Portman village locals and tourists taking a break from Oxford Street. Ales include Doom Bar, juice is freshly squeezed, breakfasts are superb. There's a slightly more formal restaurant upstairs and eight bedrooms over a further three floors. Each comes in boutique country-house style; marble bathrooms have roll top tubs or powerful showers; cool neutral shades and sash-and-cord windows keep things super-fresh.

Guest feedback
"We found The Grazing Goat via Sawdays, and booked for the one night we were in town. We were very happy with our choice as soon as we arrived. The pub at ground floor was lively & stylish & the staff were very helpful. Our room was great with a cool, calm feel, especially given its proximity to the bustle of the West End. The highlight of the stay was the bed which after a long day of travelling & walking across London gave us one of the best night's sleep..... followed by a superb breakfast. A brilliant place that we would strongly recommend."
