Cromer crab, Morston mussels, game from the Gunton Estate - lots to love at this revived food pub near the National Trust’s Blickling Hall

Read guest comments

A local farming family bought this Norfolk food pub in 2012 and the unspoilt brick-and-timber cottage in sleepy Itteringham remains a favourite for first-class modern British food. Daily menus are utterly seasonal and delight in fresh local produce – pork, beef and pheasant reared on the Harrold farm, Cromer crab, Morston mussels and venison from the Gunton Estate. Typically, there's Norfolk Dapple soufflé; chicken, ham hock and leek pie with creamy mash; vanilla rice pudding with brandy poached apricots. You can eat in the bar, with rough brick walls, beamed ceilings, standing timbers and wood-burner, or in the stylish Garden Room. East Anglian ales too, from Adnams and Woodforde's, a first-class list of wines, a glorious vine-covered terrace for summer, and great walks from the door across the Blickling Estate.

Oliver Harrold:

  • The Walpole’s ethos is to serve innovative modern British cuisine prepared from the highest quality, locally sourced, seasonal produce, selected with genuine care, some from our own farm!
  • The Walpole Arms is surrounded by large country houses. Blickling hall, the old home of Anne Bolyne is a 5 minute car journey or a beautiful hour long walk over the meadows and Blickling park. Wolterton and Mannington are both within 1.5 miles.
  • If golf is your game there are courses on the coast at Sheringham, Cromer, Brancaster to mention a few and further inland there are courses just outside Norwich at Eaton, Wensum, Barnham Broom and The Royal Norwich.
  • In Norfolk we have many different types of beach. Sandy ones for children, long deserted ones for the dogs and walkers, muddy and wet ones for the wild life and twitchers, ones with cliffs and pebbles and of course those with pine trees and sand dunes.
  • Norfolk is the place to visit if you like churches. Even the smallest villages have the most enormous church. visit Salle, Aylsham, Reepham (2 churches) Blakeney, Booton, Burgh and Brampton all within about 20 minutes drive.
  • The city of Norwich is just 16 miles away and well worth a visit, with two Cathedrals, a castle, lovely cobbled streets and old buildings. The Theatre Royal has great productions or Cinema City. The Sainsbury Centre for visual arts is close to the UEA

"This lovley old pub set in the heart of North Norfolk countryside was a recent find for us despite having lived here for 20 years. It's beautiful setting and wonderfull food are an absolute delight. Long may it be successful as we intend to make it a regular haunt "
