Whether you opt for a ploughman’s with Colston Bassett stilton or the full Sunday roast, you’re in for a treat. They’re child-friendly, too

An Elizabethan farmhouse that became an ale house around 1700, and an inn 100 years later. Today it is a deeply civilised pub. The front room exudes country-house charm – scatter cushions on sofas and settles, crackling logs in Jacobean fireplaces – and you can order a splendid ploughman's with Colston Bassett stilton from the dairy up the road (do visit). In the restaurant, menus change daily, while highlights include pan-fried scallops with Stafford black pudding; locally shot game with seasonal vegetables; delicious Sunday roast beef. Polish off with treacle sponge and butterscotch sauce with brandy butter ice cream. Behind the bar is an impressive range of well-kept real ales, cognacs and malts, with 20 wines (including sparkling and champagne) by the glass or carafe, and a further 22 by the bottle.
