Hook Norton Brewery - Pub in Oxfordshire
Brewery Lane, Hook Norton, OX15 5NY, Oxfordshire

About 30 minutes north of Oxford, on the edge of pretty Hook Norton, is a Cotswolds’ gem, a national treasure, in the family since 1849. Staff, distinguished by Hook Norton shirts, are engaging and knowledgeable, and the tours – six days a week – are fascinating. From the beer samplings in the old maltings to the shire horses in the yard, and the pizzas and pints in the cellar below, it’s a brilliant day out. There’s mashing at the top, boiling in the middle, and fermentation and racking at ground level; when steam pours out of the high chimneys it's like something out of Willy Wonka. The tour is a history lesson in Victorian engineering and brewing processes, from the original stream engine to the grist mill and open fermenting vessels. Yet Hook Norton is a vibrant and forward thinking company, and new recipes are being created all the time.
