Quintessential English charm in the Cotswolds. Good-value rooms - many with lovely views and hearty food

Achingly pretty Cotswold stone cottages around a village green with quacking ducks, a pond and a perfect pub. Archie is affable and charming with locals and guests, and the bar is lively – not with music but with talk. The pretty flagstoned dining room (exposed stone walls, pale wood tables) is inviting, the cobbled courtyard has been nicely re-landscaped, and there are lovely unpompous touches like jugs of flowers in the loo. You can lunch by the fire in the bar – our chilli burger with French fries hit the spot but there are devilled kidneys too, Dexter beef and Guinness pie, homemade puds, and serious cheeses – thanks to an excellent new chef. Loads to do round these parts: antiques in Stow, walking and riding in gorgeous countryside, a music festival in June.

Guest feedback
"We recently stayed four nights at the Kings Head, using it as a base for exploring the Cotswolds. We had one of the back rooms and it was quiet and very comfortable. The breakfasts (included in the rate) were excellent although there was a battle for the bananas between us and the other Aussies staying there! We had two dinners, one in the dining room and the otherin the bar area, and bot were excellent. The menu is interesting and the wine list comprehensive. There are other excellent dining options available in the nearby village of Kingham. The staff were very friendly and competent and we could not fault our stay."
