Braised ox cheek? A pint of scrumpy? There’s no better place to park your punt than by the willow-fringed gardens of the glorious Perch

Off one of the main arteries into Oxford, you spin down a leafy lane for half a mile to arrive in a hamlet with two ways to go: ‘the Perch and ‘the Church’. At the former you find walkers with dogs, students with laptops and Londoners down for lunch. The building is listed, the fire is lit and the setting is idyllic, with a garden path arched by fairylights winding down to the river; Alice in Wonderland had its first reading here. When the sun shines, dine beneath the willows in the huge garden, enjoying delights from the shed bar, or beneath the beamed ceiling of the dining room. The food is fantastic: potted rabbit and smoked bacon, globe artichoke and mint salad, crayfish cocktails, river trout fishcakes, English cheeses, seasonal sorbets, jam tarts for kids. What Jon doesn’t know about hospitality could be written on the back of a stamp.

Local points of interest from
Jon Ellse:

  • The Perch has been a haunt for some our best poets and authors and a frequent refuge for Inspector Morse.
  • This is where Lewis Carroll and the Reverend Robinson Duckworth rowed to the pub July 1862 with three young girls — Lorina, Alice, and Edith Liddell.
  • While journeying slowly from Folly Bridge to near Godstow, Carroll began at their request to make up a story that later was expanded into Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.
