Period charm abounds at this cosy country pub: open fires, beams, ancient flags, fine steaks from Foxbury Farm and a divine chocolate tart

This ancient pub sits in glorious country with the river Windrush yards from the door and a cricket pitch waiting beyond. It started life as a water mill and stands on the Devonshire estate (the Duchess advised on its restoration). Outside, wisteria wanders along stone walls and creepers blush red in the autumn sun. Interiors come laden with period charm: beautiful windows, open fires, warm colours, the odd beam. Over the years thirsty feet have worn grooves into 400-year-old flagstones, so follow in their footsteps and stop for a pint of Hook Norton at the bar, then eat from a seasonal menu that brims with local produce: deep-fried Windrush goat's cheese, Foxbury Farm chargrilled steak, rich chocolate tart with orange sorbet. Fires roar in winter while doors in the conservatory restaurant open onto a pretty garden in good weather.

"A lovely location on the banks of the Swinbrook river and a beautiful spot to escape to. Everything was comfortable and immaculate; we had a wonderful sleep on our super comfy bed. Friendly helpful staff and very good pub food as well as good wine. The cheeseburger and the steak and onion pie were the best I remember having anywhere. Great value for money, we can't wait to return."

"We stayed in the beautifully refurbished cottage overlooking the river and fields. Very comfortable and peaceful. We ate in the pub - excellent dinner both nights, with varied menus. Also very good breakfast, joined by chickens from the garden "

"We booked a weekend at the Swan as a treat prior to the birth of our first child. It was perfect! The pub itself is welcoming and the food beter than we have had out for a very long time. The Forge bedroom is cosy, characterful and very spacious. The only drawback was being able to hear every footstep and voices from the guests in the upstairs room. The village of Swinbrook provides a stunning setting for walks without having to get in the car. Would highly recommend, although only as a special treat as it is quite pricey."
