The Montague Inn - Pub in Somerset
Shepton Montague, Wincanton, BA9 8JW, Somerset
England,
United Kingdom
The O'Callaghans' 17th-century public house has been a stables, livery, grocery; now it is an inn in the true sense of the word. You'll be warmly welcomed, with Bath Ales and regional guests that may come from Butcombe and Blindman's Brewery, two wood-burners in the bar, candles on stripped pine tables and delicious produce from organic neighbouring farms. Chef Matt Dean's food is simple yet imaginative: chunky lunchtime ploughman's of local cheeses, and daily specials such as a hot pot on Tuesdays and fresh fish and chips on Fridays. Try the grilled local goat's cheese in a celery, apple and walnut salad, or seared fillet of local beef with garlic cream mash, bacon and lentil jus – all of it's brilliant. The restaurant and rear terrace have bosky views to Redlynch and Alfred's Tower, and you can play bowls on the small lawn.
