If you're here to eat, nab a seat by the fire in the bar. Failing that, a candlelit dining table or a spot on the terrace. Chef Richard Townsend explores new takes on British dishes - both elegant modern and pub classics with a twist, like Tamworth pork sausage rolls. They don't clock up too many food miles here: eggs, vegs and most of the rest are local; some from their smallholding. And if Fowey mussels with champagne sauce and aged sirloin of beef don't do it for you, tuck into a hazelnut and mushroom roast instead. Expect a grand drinks' list too, of gins, vodkas, wines, fizz and west country ciders (glug, glug) and an unfiltered lager from Bavaria. Cocktails and cordials range from Somerset Sour and Sloegroni to homemade ginger beer. Even the puds aspire to be seasonal (well, p'haps not the dark chocolate cremeux with pearly barley & bay leaf gelato).

  • Corton Denham sits just three miles from the medieval market town of Sherborne, nestled in the dramatic hills that form the border between Dorset and Somerset.
  • Sherborne Abbey is the centrepiece of the town with a lofty nave formed from one of the finest examples of fan vaulting in Europe.
  • The town's history left its impression with two castles: the romantic ruins of the old castle, destroyed during the civil war and the New Castle perched on the edge of a scenic lake and beautiful deer park.
  • The Macmillan and Monarch's way are close by and can offer long distance walks, an afternoon walk to and from the Queens Arms would be to Cadbury Castle, the home of King Arthur.
  • National Trust properties close by include Stourhead and King Alfred Tower, Lytes Cary, Tintinhull House, Forde Abbey, Montacute House and East Lambrooke Manor Gardens, all within a 20 min drive.
