Young fun gastropub in the old capital of Wessex, with ciders from Bag & Box and a delicious take on British classics

The old capital of Wessex on its beautiful plateau is something of a best-kept secret. Now there's a new reason to visit. Characterful oriental rugs lie on parquet floors, there are tartan armchairs and leather sofas, candles on wood tables, a fire and two wood-burners, and a sweet little snug you must bag for the evening. The treats begin at the bar with ales from Bath, Cheddar and Exmoor as well as several ciders including Bag & Box. At the back, facing a central courtyard, is an upbeat dining space with an antler lamp hanging from high rafters, cool backdrop to ex-River Cottage chef Tom Blake's modern take on traditional British classics. How about wood-roasted Dorset clams, smoked pork belly or celeriac salad, followed by rolled belly of Old Spot sausage with raisin stuffing, bubble and squeak cake and Pitney kale? Every village deserves a pub like this.
