A wonderful seasonal menu takes you from summer sunshine to warm stews in the winter with mulled wine in front of open fires... Bliss!

With ale on tap from Harveys in Lewes, fresh fish from Haywards Heath, honey from their own bees, and lamb from the field opposite, this is one special pub. The central bar is its throbbing hub, wooden panelling and open fires the backdrop for jugs of mulled wine in winter-cosy rooms. During the rest of the year the big raised garden comes into its own; sit out on the stone terrace and watch horses frolic in the pretty adjoining fields. Whatever the weather, the food attracts folk from far and wide. In the stable block restaurant a changing seasonal menu from chef Shai Edginton places the emphasis on quality rather than quantity; smoked chicken terrine with harissa, roast confit duck, braised Danehill spiced lamb with roasted sweet potato and greens. Delicious! A lovely rural pub, a true local.

  • Shefield Park National Trust Gardens. Wonderful all year round classic gardens.
  • Bluebell Steam Railway. Authentic and as original as a raiiways gets and now goes all the way to East Grinstead, so you can commute to London at least some of the way by steam!
  • Ashdown Forest. On our doorstep are 1000s of acres of open forest to walk and explore. You can spend days and days on the forest and never see the same bit twice.

Guest feedback
"My son and I visited today for Sunday lunch and I had to comment. The food was astonishingly good. We had 3 courses each and every dish was perfect. The roast mains were the best we had enjoyed in a very long time, the vegetables deserving a special mention as they were so fresh and so well chosen for the dish. In addition to the fabulous food and lovely beers I was also so impressed that my elderly terrier was given treats and fussed over like a very special guest!! Service was excellent, despite how busy they were, everyone smiling and so friendly. Altogether a wonderful experience."
