A smart inn with beautiful interiors, lovely food and deep peace all around – beaches, castles and Roman palaces wait on your doorstep

Backing directly onto Pagham Harbour and the bird-rich marshes, the gentle Crab flaunts an inglenook fireplace and ancient flagstones that blend effortlessly with dark leather banquettes, ornate mirrors and vintage photos. This sparkling pub is managed by Sam but is often driven by the locals; Burns Night and wine evenings are big events. Windows offer endless sea views and there's a fishy focus to the menu, as you might expect – crab and lobster ravioli, organic sea trout with niçoise salad, Cornish sardines with black olive butter. Carnivores can tuck into lamb cutlets with roasted garlic and thyme jus, and all is served on stylish white plates. Enjoy a pint of local Sussex and choose a seat on the back terrace for views of sheep-grazed meadows and marshes.
