Just what lovely old Chichester needed: a modern pub strolling distance from the centre, with a creative kitchen and fabulous staff

Opened in 2016, it’s a hit already, with everyone: foodies, families, shoppers, sailors. Enter the pretty corner building to find a stylish open-plan space with pale walls and high ceilings, striking lamps above a zinc bar, an assortment of scrubbed wooden tables and a couple of smart brown chesterfields. Charlotte is front of house, Martin runs the kitchen, and seasonality is the key. This is inventive cooking of the most enjoyable kind and our Selsey crab Scotch egg was delicious. On the menu: fillets of bass, bavette steaks and Funtington pork, lunchtime sandwiches, handmade burgers, and a gorgeous baked aubergine with chickpea fritters. Summer puds include roast peaches, breakfast runs from 10 till 12, and drinks range from Belvoir Elderflower to Hophead beer to a number of gins. And there’s a big walled garden for barbecues.
