A lively inn on the Alscot estate with gardens that run down to a small river. There's a beautiful terrace, too, a popular spot for lunch in the sun, washed down by a pint of home-brewed ale. Inside, chic interiors mix of old and new to great effect – low beamed ceilings and exposed brick walls, then lots of colour and leather banquettes. You’ll find candles everywhere, armchairs in front of the fire, black-and-white screen prints of estate life. Recent additions include an airy new restaurant with a wall of glass that opens onto the terrace, then a balcony above, where you can scoff afternoon tea while gazing out on open country. There's good food, too, with lamb and beef straight from the estate. You’ll find sharing plates, soups and salads, perhaps seared tuna with chilli fritters, rump steak with a pepper sauce, banana sponge with toffee ice cream. Stylish bedrooms have smart fabrics, crisp linen, sofas or armchairs if there's room. Two are small, suites are enormous and have gorgeous bathrooms. A road passes to the front, quietly at night. Stratford waits up the road for all things Shakespeare.

"The Bell weaves a wonderful warm ambience throughout with candlelit tables and log fires. Food fabulous - excellent Sunday lunch and exceptional well presented breakfasts. Staff young, professional, friendly and efficient adding to the overall experience. Rooms priced according to size and are sumptuous with well stocked bathrooms and comfortable beds with good quality linens and nice touches such as well stocked tea trays, homemade biscuits and fresh milk provided if required. Lovely grounds with attractive seating looking out to countryside views - beautifully lit at night. "

"We booked the night before by telephone as we needed to make a last minute business trip to the Cotswolds via London. After a busy day which involved setting off from our home in the north at 6am, the usual traffic problems in London, then a drive in monsoon rain to Stratford, we concluded business at about 5.30pm and found our way to The Bell. The welcome was genuine, our room, immaculate and we relaxed to drinks in the bar and a perfect evening meal with exemplary service. After a comfortable night's sleep and delightful breakfast (porridge par excellence!) we left, wishing we could stay. "

"Excellent value for £95 for two, dinner B&B. Our small double was beautifully designed and well-equipped thick white towels, L'Occitane toiletries, excellent reading lights, cafetiere and real coffee and quality tea. Dinner and breakfast were excellent and the bar attractive with a friendly vibe, clearly popular with locals."

"We stayed 3 nights and our son and daughter stayed 2 nights to celebrate our ruby wedding.Very conveniently we occupied all 3 rooms on the first floor. Our party of 6 was made to feel most welcome and nothing was too much trouble for management or staff. The rooms were all spotlessly clean and well equipped, the bathroom having the most amazing shower I have ever used.We ate in the restaurant each night and had no problem selecting something different each time.A good selection of beers and wines were available in the bar and restaurant.Breakfast saw a large choice with many items being locally sourced. Thanks to all at the Bell for a wonderful Easter and a truly memorable 40th anniversary."
