A very fine village inn, all polished flagstones, heavy beams and swathes of bold colour. For winter cosiness, dine in the bar by the fire

The Howard buzzes with good-humoured babble as well-kept beer flows from the flagstoned bar. Logs crackle contentedly in a vast open fire; a blackboard menu scales the wall above; a dining room at the far end has unexpected elegance, with great swathes of bold colour and some noble paintings. The village is a surprise, literally tucked under a lone hill, with an unusual church surrounded by orchards and an extended village green. Round off an idyllic walk amid buzzing bees and wild flowers with a meal at the inn, perhaps salmon trio with celeriac remoulade and orange dressing, then beef, ale and mustard pie, then spiced pear and apple flapjack crumble. From a menu with seasonal local produce, the food is inventive and upmarket.

Guest feedback
"Meeting an old colleague for lunch, who lived near Oxford and I was working in the area, down from North Yorkshire. A warm comfortable pub. Clearly updated, very sympathetically done, not OTT or twee. Everyone friendly and helpful. The food was well presented, plus tasted as it should, veg were perfect! I'd be very happy to return for food or a stay, as good location, quiet, nice village, easy to reach and central for exploring. Thank you to everyone at the Howard arms. "
